Hi AnjuRN,

Last week, 15.8.20-Independence day happened to be on Saturday and many establishments following 5 days week work had weekly holiday on this day. Hence they didn't avail extra holiday and no compensation. Except those essential staff who were asked to work on a compulsory/Festival holiday there is no need to grant either compensatory off or pay them holiday wages. Instead they can have extra holiday for some other festivals like Diwali are any other important local festivals/day by adjusting among the overall list of holidays in accordance with the approved SO or Leave policy in vogue. I know some units have the practice of declaring next working day as a paid holiday if the compulsory holiday falls on Sunday or a weekly off. It depends on practices followed in the respective units.

Strictly speaking, in case of coincidence of National or Festival holiday with the weekly off, the employee should be allowed to avail the holiday in which case no compensatory off is required to be given.
