In my opinion you need to be both a trusted team player who is competent and a boss's favorite also because your behavior has to be good towards your boss and other team members. I know many people who were competent but were fired from the job because of their adamant and arrogant behavior.Every boss would love competent subordinate but no boss will tolerate bad behavior.Person with good relationship with boss and competent, will always progress faster than a person competent but having poor relationship with boss.

Hi,
Trusted team player is always favorable, then automatically you will be favorite of all . Then you can play both the way as trusted & as favorite.
That's the way I feel, successful corporate life is.
Thanks,

Always be a trusted team player. Never be your boss favourite. Because its the team with whom you spend most of your time and that too not only in office but in personal ways too. Boss is something which gives you promotion and that too once in 2 or 3 years but team mates are the one who stays with you always in all your ups and downs in working as well as in personal life sometimes
