Hi All,
The concept of leadership has been much researched and developed over time. It is said that leadership is a skill essential in managing today's organizations. Inumerable questions have been raised about leadership..... what is Leadership? Who are leaders & who are their followers? Can leaders be followers? Can we become leaders or are we born leaders? Are managers and leaders different?
I wish to gain an insight into the muti faceted concept of leadership by seeking answers.
What do you think?????
Is it possible to develop leadership competencies in managers to enable them to identify leadership situations and deal with them accordingly?

Sandhya

Don't worry Sandhya.
Leadership is most misundertood concept in India. By the term we mean boldness, self-confidence and sacrifice.
that is what a typical indian psyche understands from Leadership.
Leadership is a constantly evolving concept. There was command and control type of leadership until mid 20th century. But after that we got independance, the concept meant effective management and decision making, risk taking and entrepreunership.
Then it slowly evolved to its current understanding of Transformative leadership (Warren Bennis).
But there are servant leadership, Primal leadership, Transparent leadership, Level 5 leadership etc.

Dear Sandhya,

You have raised too many questions though your post is small. Answers to your questions can be found in any ordinary book on organisation behaviour. These topics are discussed extensively on those books. Secondly, there are books on leadership itself. Read any book and get your questions answered.

However, let me reply your last question. You have asked "Is it possible to develop leadership competencies in managers to enable them to identify leadership situations and deal with them accordingly?"

My answer is yes it is possible to develop leadership competencies in managers. But it requires a lot of organisational maturity and systems and processes must be stabilised in your company. You must have sufficient examples of your own company staff wherein they showed leadership or failed to show it. Secondly, to develop these modules, your training department must work very closely with the operations or other departments.

To grow managers into leaders, you must have Leadership Development Programme (LDP) well in place. It can stretch up to two years as well. Whatever training imparted to the managers must be recorded and their change in behaviour must be measured and monitored closely. Their promotion should be based on the competencies required for the future position and should not be on the past achievements.

Lastly, these projects requires lot of top management support. The smaller companies think that they cannot afford to have LDPs. In the bargain they send their managers to some outbound training, make them walk on the fire etc. Couple of months later the things are back to square one!

I have developed LDP module. Though not executed as of now, I have given quotation to one of the MNCs.

By the way I am into soft skills, behavioural and management training. Predominantly, I handle training for managers. To make you aware of my training activities, I have attached my Training e-Brochure to this post. It would be my pleasure to train managers of your company on leadership.

Thanks,
