Dear Seniors,
I am working in a manufacturing plant having more than 500 employees(white collar). Our management is asking us to increase the leaves of Senior Manager & above cadre employees.Approx.8 to 10 employees are there in this category. The problem with our existing system is that we have very less leaves.Including CL ,SL ,Optional Leaves its around 8 leaves ,EL is around 20 based on working days & 8 National Holidays are there. In our company people from different part of India are working & for them it became difficult to balance their social life in these leaves. We are receving many suggestions from employees for increasing leaves.
So can we increase the leaves for Sr.Manager & above cadre leaving the below cadre staff.I personally feel we should not discriminate on basis of designation, if we are increasing any benefit then we should maintain uniformity across levels.
Please suggest what to do.
With Regards

Dear Aakansha,
You have come up with the strange post. First let me come to number of days of leave. You have Optional Leave 8 days and EL 20 days. This is more than sufficient by Indian standards. Therefore, your argument that you have very less number of days of leave for the managerial category is not necessarily valid.
Coming to segregating senior managers and giving them additional quota of leave. Senior managers are given additional perks. It is a considered view that they contribute in the growth of the company through their decision making abilities. However, giving them additional type of leave is unheard of. I would take rather contrary position and say that they need to be given fewer days of leave and not more. If not less, let them be at least at par with others.
Let other senior members also put forth their views. If their viewpoint is also similar to mine then you may approach your "management" and apprise them that you had approached prominent HR forum and the seniors are for maintaining uniformity in eligibility to avail of leave. Seniors may be given extra perks but certainly not more leave.
Last note: - Please note that there is no plural for "leave". Please write "number of days of leave".
Thanks,

Hi Akansha
While I second the all the points of Mr. Dinesh, Please note that any additional leave given to senior management cadre may result in demotivation for other cadre employees.
Hope you will consider this also.

I second the thoughts by Mr. Divekar Sir, The no of days of leave has to be uniform. There is nothing that the senior management will benefit by increasing the nos. other than some perks while encashing. Also the current nos as quoted by you are more than enough.
May what is required in training the senior management in time management and leave management so that they can manage their work-life balance.

Well, I am in a bit of disagreement with above comments. Senior Managers and above contribute to the profits and lead the organisations far long. Their decision making intellectual skills are the asset for the company to be appreciated and retained. Whereas the lower designations work as per clock mostly, the senior positions are supposed to deliver the work done without any time constraints which many times leads to excess and odd hours of workings.
People working with laptops and internet on the move are so much mobilized that they are actually feel the burden at times with the increased demands of industry and employers accordingly. So your management if suggesting and is in favor of doing so then it can be done full confidence. You may later get a chance to bring other employees also covered under this increased leave policy as a matter of uniformity but if you restrain it now then in future you don't know when this will be done.
Also the minimum number of leaves to be extended to all category of employees is 7 casual leaves, 7 sick leaves and 15 earned leaves. 7 or 8 Holidays as per state laws apart from leaves. Anything above then is considered as favorable to employees and gives an impression of a healthy employer to work for. Lastly, it will also encourage the lower ranks to contribute more and rise to the next levels so that they can also earn the extended benefits, if someone thinks on the reciprocal then there is no end to negative thoughts.

It is the team who contribute towards the growth of the organization which includes a office boy also. As marketing department directly involve in generating business we shall not give them additional facility compared to other department.A school story can be recalled: "Heart says if I will stop function..............".
Policy (Principle of organization) should be uniform for all staffs despite of grade/ designation/ pay scale. If we will not resist now then different excuses may come in future. As suggestions are coming from employee, it can be discussed with the top management to increase the leave days for all staffs.

Dear Aakansha,
Any welfare measure or additional facility is a welcome step, when it is made for all without discrimination. You need to understand this aspect in context of your entire organisation. Is your management is sure that there would not be any sparkoff by agraieved section? If Yes, you can do so. But I do not feel, it is sacred.
In this context Mr. Divakar has given very suitable guidance to adhere. You are also not in favour this idea of increase in leave for Sr Managers and above which is evident from your post.
Therefore, you putforth the ideas and views expressed by the community before your management, to take a decission.

Thank you Prabhatji and Jitendra ji for your guidance.I have discussed this with my management and they agreed with the concept of having uniformity in leaves for all.
Thanks a lot to all seniors whose guidance helped me in solving this issue.
