Hi, If a staff was supposed to come (say alternate day) to the manufacturing plant (Pharmaceutical essential items). But doesn't turn up. Will he be liable for 1 day absenteeism OR 2 day absenteeism OR no deduction at all?

Dear A Jain,
Staff was supposed to come for the duty but then he did not turn up for the duty. Did you find out the reasons for his absence? What is the mode of transportation? What is the chance he could be picked up by the police for the violations of the national lockdown?
By the way, have you acquired pass for him from the police authorities to attend to the duties? Without a valid pass, the police may even arrest him. Have you deliberated upon these challenges?
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar

Dear Dinesh
Thanks for your reply.
Conditions/support provided by us for coming to duty are as follows:
Dedicated transport with approved permissions and passes issued by local authorities/MPIDC/police.
Individual passes also provided accordingly.
Extensive safety measures in place, and in addition daily at least an hour of training and orientation given everyday as a reminder so that people are aware and educated in the plant, during transit and at their home also.
Under such situation, what are the applicable attendance or absenteeism rules?

Dear A Jain,
If the dedicated transport is provided, the pass has been acquired from the police authorities to work then there was no reason for that person to be absent. Issue the show-cause notice to the absentee and if the reasons for the absence are not credible then mark the employee as absent. However, the absence should be marked only for the period for which the employee was absent and marking cannot exceed.
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar

Dear A Jain,
The rule is simple, not present on duty means is to be treated absent. You need to call for an explanation, in present context this action shall be treated as severe lapse on part of staff. The staff can be mark absent for the allocated day of work.

Good day.
Here in Karnataka, the govt has provided relaxations for some of the industries and we are working. But, a few employees are residing in their villages. A containment zone is in between their villages and our industry. Some are within the city but are dependent on public transport and We are unable to provide them dedicated transport facility. In such cases, should we pay them equal to what we pay the others who are working?
Thanks.
