Hello everybody, I was working for about 15 years as an EA to senior directors. But now I am planning to switch my career into HR. Presently I am pursuing my PGHR (last semester remaining) through correspondence. I am fairly strong in my communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Soft skills training seemed to be an area of interest. But I had certain queries which I list below and request your replies :-
(1) Which reputed institutes in Mumbai which offer such courses which could give me a certification for being a soft skills trainer?
(2) What are the career prospects in today's industry (demand vs supply)?
(3) I have a small kid and hence cannot go into a full time job for atleast a year. But I am willing to acquire the necessary practical training and also do some part-time assignments to gain the required experience. Where and whom can I approach for the same?
(4) Two institutes whom I had approached to get information on their TTT course also mentioned that I could join them on a part time basis after successful completion of the course. Their websites list different types of courses in which they train like personality development, communication, presentation skills etc...but I felt they are mainly into English language courses. It made me wonder whether these classes even have the required strength of students for conducting the training? If somebody knows, please enlighten me as to what's the realistic picture of these institutes? Will joining them as a part time trainer benefit me in the long run?
I am sorry for the long post, but wanted to clear most of my doubts in one post itself.

Hi
It is really good that you have identified your key strengths of strong communication skills and effective interpersonal skills. Both these skills are extremely important for a good trainer. However, it is equally if not more important to have domain expertise. Focus on this aspect when you plan your career in training. Doing a formal course from ISTD or a well structured TTT from reputed institute would add more weight to your resume and learning. My suggestion would be to do a TTT to get a quick hang of how corporate training is structured and executed. If possible also invest in attending a few training programs as a participant to learn, assimilate and appreciate the finer nuances of training.
The real challenge for you is to prepare your own training modules and then finding the opportunities to take training. My suggestion here is to try and take a few sessions of short durations for MBA Institutes, Rotary Clubs, Post Graduate Classes and the like so that you can get the necessary practice, feedback and confidence to take a day long sessions. Do remember that you would have to keep updating the program to include humor, relevant exercises and activities to engage the audience and share updated information from reliable sources to reinforce the learning.
If you have the time and the inclination you can do the ISTD course to strengthen your resume.

Hi
Thank you for your detailed reply. Your blogs are very inspirational.
Could you please recommend me the names of reputed private institutions who conduct TTT programmes in mumbai? Also what would be the ideal content of a TTT module? In the meantime I am also trying to get the relevant information from ISTD.
Thanks

Hi Dhwani and Sneha
Thank you both for your appreciative feedback about my blogs. I am glad that you find them very useful.
Dhwani I am afraid I would not be in a position to give you my recommendations about institutes providing a good TTT program in Mumbai because I have not had a first hand experience of the same nor do I have any feedback from participants who have attended the same.
In my view and effective TTT should cover the following broad topics
Overview of training and the trainers role and importance
Skills sets and attitude of an effective trainer
Training needs analysis
Designing a training program and customizing it as per client needs
Delivering an effective training session
Designing a variety of training activities and effectively executing them
Importance and relevance of debriefing after activities or exercises
Managing and handling the audience and answering questions
Evaluating the training

Hi - I tried to hunt for reputed institutes who give certification for TTT courses in Mumbai but hardly found any.
The only one which I got advertises a lot in leading newspapers and do have a lot of branches but they have a fixed module (I wanted to learn more on the content development part). They claim to be a very sought after institute in BPO training and Spoken English. But I have no source of getting any kind of review on their programme and the benefits post that.
Then there is this trainer from a small fairly new training and development enterprise who has offered to customize the course and would give a one to one coaching. I tried to look up for information regarding this trainer and found that she was heading customer service and sales depts. in reputed Companies. What I appreciated about her was that she was upfront and did not paint a rosy picture as most of the institutes do. She said that they deal with only SMEs and have a fairly decent bulk of assignments if not many. She mentioned that I could get associated with such institutes (including hers) on a freelance basis and start working on small assignments initially.
I do not want to do online courses.
Now, my query is that - what should I do? I am confused. Please........help. I do not want to just learn this for the sake of having a fancy certificate. I want to start working immediately even if its on a very small scale and get the required exposure slowly and gradually.

Hi Dhwani,
My suggestion is go on and start of with the second person who is willing to give you one on one coaching. If she gives you assignments that is a real bonus. Ultimately the proof of the pudding is in the eating so go ahead and delve into it and start learning and at the earliest start taking sessions.

Hello Dhwani Rajagopal
In the last couple of months I have been browsing Cite HR frequently.
Most of the threads were found to be woefully short of details.
Your thread began with a clear requirement and it is unfortunate
that you could not get satisfactory replies.
Some very useful tips have been provided by Mr B.Jacob
and I am glad that you have decided on a particular strategy.
Can I add two more suggestions?
In the field of Soft skill and TTT Cite HR offers a gamut of postings.
If you type your query you will be flooded with many threads of Soft Skills and TTT.
Please go through them.
As you go through you will come across diversified views and the finer details.
DOs and Donts, Presentations, Quotes etc will put you straight away on an informal learning course.
Your exposure to the subject and knowledge enrichment will start in right earnest without delay.
If you go through another search, say for Consultants and Free lancers
you will get contact details.
Many have posted their resume.
You can have a look at them to know from which institutes they got the additional qualification.
So in the coming one year you can learn a lot by visiting Cite HR and also by contributing from your experience. So this one year is a God Sent opportunity!
After nearly four decades of working in other fields I am also an HR aspirant !
Best of Luck,
