Salary Advance

An office boy asked for a salary advance and the accountant answered in the negative.

The boy argued over why clerical staff alone were offered a salary advance.

On hearing the matter, the Management has made a policy to completely stop giving salry advance.

Moral: It is not wrong to ask for a salary advance, but it is certainly wrong to ask ‘Give me what you have given to others’.

It is wrong because when you ask for what the others has got or is getting……..
1) You will certainly deprive yourself of the possibility of getting what you want.

2) You may tragically create a situation by which others too will be deprived of what they were getting.

Hi Readers
The story is nice, and moral of the story also is appropriate .. however as per my opinion, its also injustice, why is clerical staff allowed to get salary advance but not the office boy, in an organization all employees must be treated equal, policy should be applied to one and all with same rules as prescribed. Instead of canceling the policy of giving salary advance, management should have granted the office boy salary advance first and later should have changed the policy as per management's convenience.
This is just a story..with office boy as an example, but it could be one of us in our respective jobs in which we face this bias in our day to day life. so just sharing a thought ! in human spirit !
Thanks

Hi AVS,
a good one. Until and unless there is a structured policy the payment of salary advance is at the discretion of the management.
Unfortunately the management has came under the pressure and withdrawn the salary advance payment to the staff memebers also.
One way the office boy has done the mistake but in the other way the management also repeated the mistake. In the business the management has to face so many challenges and instead of facing challenges they want to withdraw then it will be difficult to run the business.
If the management decided to pay attire allowance to the managers who are dealing with the high end customers and if the office boys objects the same and the management withdraws and taking it as a prestagious issue the managers goes in a shabby dress then it is going to be a disaster.

This is only a story with a moral for an individual's action.

The moral is that the
stronger survives - weaker deprived.
It hearts me that such stone hearted people are managing the affairs of the companies. After all, one works to earn and at times one need an extra money to meet an emergent situation. The advance is only the salary paid in advance and in matter of few days it will be adjusted against the salary payable.
By depriving a lowly employee in need, the management has fumbled. By withdrawing the facility to all, management has blundered.
After all it is the human resource that make the company grow and earn its profit and brand equity. If management cannot come to the rescue of its needy employees, it will make the HR talent disgruntled and that will bring about a doom to the company.

Good Morning AVSJAI Nice posting. It happens almost in many organisations. Facilities provided by company if misused by anyone, the same are withdrawn. CVH

Dear AVS,

The story should be looked at with two angles.

The story teller has analyzed and concluded from the first angle where it is told that the described effect would be eminent. One asks for or expects something considering it as a right, then something unexpected happens. (This is what happens in the TODAY's managements). Fine.

The second angle requires to look at the story from real TOP MANAGEMENT + JUSTNESS point of view.

Clerical staff and office staff - both of these cadres are company employees and both the category of employees are (usually) on the payroll of the company. If management can give advance to clerical staff, what is there that holds them not to give the same facility to office staff? Moreover, the management is making another mistake by stopping the facility to all the employees. By doing so they are demoralizing not only the office staff but also the clerical staff.

While starting certain practices, even trivial ones, any company management should think of the long run, consider all facets that will be impacted by the policy decision before implementing it. Of course, all this requires experience and logical thinking.

Good one to chew on the thoughts for our learning process.

With regards,
Jayant

Some how I dont like management responding like this. There should be equality of benefits. This is utilisation of opportunity.

If precedents are set then they must be followed through for all employees irrespective of their status in the company. However, what was done in the past does not guarantee that the same practices will be observed in the future too. That is why it is important to have SOPs and policies and procedures and to strictly adhere to them at all times. It brings clarity in the working system and creates a healthy workplace.
