Every employer looks for consistency in a candidate. But it is a fact that in today's world almost everyone is changing job for following reasons:

1. Better salary and working conditions.

2. New Job Opportunity and Challenges.

3. Good Culture and Facilities in the office.

4. Want to spend less time in traveling and look for office nearer to their home.

5. Not satisfied with boss's behavior.

6. Want to work in a well known company etc.

In such a scenario should an employer ask the standard question

" Why you want to change your present company?". When it is fact that employer wants to urgently close that position.

I do understand that the employer is looking for stability and commitment in a candidate. What is wrong in changing job frequently if a persons ultimate goal is to work in a company of his choice and dreams. I believe that time will come when one will spent a long time in a company of their choice till retirement. But till that time why not look for a change. Because it happens that when you work for multiple companies you get exposed to different work cultures and your experience becomes diversified and I feel that experience can be accumulated and utilized in a big company where it was not possible to apply earlier because of following reasons:

1. Person not qualified and experienced for the job.

2. Companies recruiting only students from top management institutes and institutes conducting full time courses and they straightaway reject part time MBA candidates.

I hope you understood what I am trying to convey. Kindly discuss on this topic.

Dear Mandy
I feel the employer should ask this question. The object behind the question is not merely to explore an option to retain the employee, more so if he is one who adds value to the company which I do not find anything wrong with in as much as with an employee who wants to leave
for various reasons as listed by you but also to get a feed back from him about the functioning, work culture, adequacy of compensation or even for suggestions on business development so that he can reorient his thinking and strategies to make his business competetive in this market driven economy.I feel this is a crucial question, if asked with right intentions from the employer point of view.
