Dear Seniors,
I am currently residing in Abu Dhabi (U.A.E.) and have recently enrolled in a Masters in Organizational Psychology/Human Resource Management program with the University of London (Distance Learning). They have a convenient program of a step by step process of achieving your Masters. You have the option of directly registering for your Masters or earn a certificate (for the first 3 modules), then move on to the PGDiploma and then the Master. So this way you get something tangilble for your progress and if you need to take a break it still works in your favour to have your certificate / PGD to help with career enhancement.
Anyway, my question is would this degree I obtain from the University of London be valid to get a job in Mumbai? I am looking to move back to Mumbai after completing my Masters program.
I would appreciate it if someone could inform me on how big "Training and development" is within companies in Mumbai?
Thanks and regards,
A Coelho

Dear Mona,

Thank you for your interest. I am just curious about you, are you working in HR in Mumbai?

To answer your questions, I have obtained my Bachelor degree in Arts from Sophia College in Mumbai. Double major in History and Psychology, graduated in 2000.

I was always interested in pursuing my Masters but the reason I did not settle down for a general MBA program with any of the Indian universities was because of my educational background. I knew that I would not be able to cope with subjects like Finance and Economics without attending full time classes.

What caught my interest with the UOL Master program were its modules. The link for this information is in - http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/pros...tructure.shtml

I am a people's person and I love the idea of training and counseling adolescents. Out here in Abu Dhabi unfortunately to do so you need to be of Arab nationality due to the cultural norms.

I've worked as an administrator for 4 years now (out of my 7 years of work experience) and have worked with the HR department although have not managed to obtain a major role. In the UAE, HR is more administrative, once the policies and procedures are in place all one needs to make sure is that they are followed or amended from time to time. The rest of the activities involve interviews, contracts, job descriptions, induction/orientation, visa procedures, compensation/benefits, budgeting etc. I have played a role in all the mentioned activities other than budgeting and compensation & benefits.

What lacks in this part of the world is training within organizations and that is something I find myself drawn towards. The rest of the HR aspects are way to administrative and thus can get very repetitive and mundane.

I am currently working as an Assistant to the Director of a Women Engineering College, mainly for Local Women, funded by one of the biggest oil companies in Abu Dhabi and my job profile varies from being a secretary to a counselor to the girls here. We work hard to mentor these girls to become strong and focused individuals and at the same time making sure we provide them with all the facilities they require to reach for the stars!

So that is my background and now I am hoping I get more information from you and maybe tips on places that I should look to apply in Mumbai.

Thanks,

Amanda.
