Hi
You are fortunate to have free time at work and here are some possible ways to utilize that time profitably:
Reading - Journals and books relevant to HR. Read up on topics that you feel are especially important in your current job. Read up on topics of your interest as well as on those topics in which you would seek more inputs /clarity.
Planning - Identify areas of work where you can standardize and/ or simplify and/ or strengthen the existing system. Prepare formats that are relevant to your varied activities both in physical form as well as in EXCEL sheets. You can also plan out things to strengthen the administrative matters, make the reception area more welcoming etc. Plan a welcome note for new entrants incorporating the do's and dont's that forms part of the corporate policy including the leave policy, the outstation duty policy, the different allowances etc.
Notings - Make a noting of areas of improvement / some new initiatives that you can propose. Note also the frequent complaints / laments of employees as also the suggestions that they could be making in the passing.
Don't limit your thinking. Hence be open to new ideas, explore avenues beyond your immediate job profile and start implementing what you can initiate immediately.
Best Wishes

Hi Anuradha,
You can make the job descriptions for various profile, also read about how to make the HR policy which will include Leave, Attendance, Safety policy, Harassment policy, terms and condition of work etc.
Make the employee Master if you don't have all the details of employees such as name, DOB, Current Address, Permanent Address, PAN No. Adhaar Card No, Family details, Soft copy of passport size photograph, Blood Group, Contact No. Email ID, Marital Status, Qualification etc.
You must be deducting PF from the employees salary and they must be having their UAN (Universal Account Number ) so for KYC all these information should be updated on the website of epfindia.com (Adhaar, PAN, Bank Account No.).Also check the esic website.
Also check out various draft of letters on the websites (Appointment letter, Confirmation letter, warning Letter, Transfer Letter etc).
Start a induction program for new joiners in which you will have to tell about the HR Policy and also have to complete the joining procedures.
Put suggestion box in the company so that employees can give some good suggestions for company benefit, employee benefit, for any changes in the company.
Provide ID cards if you you don't have.
Start interacting with the employees to know about them and the working condition.
Regards

Dear Anuradha,
I echo all the measures suggested by our seniors. Please identify any area with HR that you would want to learn more about , such as Compensation or Appraisal and learn it from the scratch.
Since you are new to the system, this study will help you to explore the practices for it within your firm and then benchmark it with the industry. This will also help you gain respect from the seniors in the firm, as they would notice you for your keenness and effort to become an SME with in your firm.
Consider blogging in here, all that you learn so that we too can learn from you and add if needed.
Stay close to the core, and you will remain relevant. Wish you all the best!

Hi Anuradha, My advice will be a bit different from my other learned professional friends. I find that you write English sentences, without even a full stop in between, no punctuation etc where they are required. You cannot leave it to the reader to read and assume many things ! An old joke goes this way: From the Palace, the King ordered an arrested person to be released. However, the person who prepared the note used wrong punctuation and got hanged instead. The sentence was " HANG HIM NOT, LEAVE HIM !" The comma after NOT got shifted to the place after HIM ! So, for a HR person English language skill is crucial and vital. As a HR professional writing and drafting skills play a crucial part in your career. You cannot turn to seniors or others or to standard formats whenever you need to write a letter or a memo or even a simple plain communication to an employee or to management on your own. Why not spend a part of your free time to improve your English vocabulary, spoken as well as written English. Pick up some books and read, read newspapers daily so that your vision gets enlarged and get to know what is happening in HR in other business segments, in and around the world. This will help you updated as well.
Best wishes.
