Hello I am an HR in a small IT Firm. Its been 10 months working here.
My employees have started showing hatred towards me because every time I ask them to be disciplined and have work ethics. I have a long time struggling to make them behave professionally. But instead of obeying they have formed a collective group and fun whenever an announcement is made or mail is sent.
What should be done?

Bringing about behavioral change is a challenging task. One way could be to organize training programs. You can take the help of external trainers and brief them of this concern and ask, if you can design some group exercises to drive home the point of ethics and maintaining a professional work atmosphere. Speak to top management as well, ask for feedback. They may be able to guide you, probably to change your style of communication with the team

Enforcing discipline is a difficult job.
One has to be tactful and careful in words.
One must choose issues to be enforced and to be ignored.
Play a balanced role.No point being a school teacher.
Try and involve the departmental heads in this initiative.
Have an in house exercise to see what are the problem areas and then make it a group task involving HODs,senior workers/staff.
Finally do not get disheartened by this response and never react angrily when such adverse comments are made.

Hi...
I fully agree with the views expressed earlier in this thread that enforcing a discipline / bringing change is not an easy task.
I believe that those days have gone whereby you can impose the discipline on an employees ONLY BY imposing penalty / penalizing them and that to in a type of sector (Information & Technology) in which companies are following very good HR practices to motivate their employees.
- Have one to one meeting with the employee who is opposing the policy of the company / does want to work in the disciplined way.. Try to convince him/her and I am very sure you will get success.
- Even after that if they don't become disciplined / don't follow the work ethics penalize them but don't forget to counsel him that penalty will be his loss only and being a part of the organization he has to follow the rules and regulations of the organization.
- Even after this if you see no improvement, there is no other way left other than to discontinue his services.
BUT I BELIEVE YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE RESOLVED WITH THE FIRST TWO STEPS MENTIONED ABOVE.
All the best.
Regards.
