I have been unemployed for the last 5 years because of Depression. Now the doctors say I am fit to apply for any job. How do I explain the unemployment gap in my resume ? Please Guide.

It is a very difficult question to answer. Probably you could say some domestic compulsion/work kept you out of the job market.

Hello,
Very first thing, what was the reason for depression? professional or personal. If professional company might not select you, as they will feel you are not ready for stress management. If personal, company will say you don't know how to keep your personal and professional life separately.
Being HR the only solution i see is you need to build up your confidence while interview and practically need to convince them for your skills.

Hi Shady_HR

The reason of depression is not always something happening in our environment. There are times when there could be chemical imbalances in the mind leading to depression.

Hi Hemmeh

As per my experiences with Indian companies, depression and mind-related issues are not taken as illnesses and looked down upon. People don't understand that depression could be an illness. Here's my suggestion to you:

a) Find a company that works for people with disabilities. (Send your resume to ::SILVER LININGS::)

b) See if you are comfortable putting in some job like a home tutor in your resume where you are not supposed to give any documents and you can cover your experience too.

c) Hone your interview skills and the core-job skills you are applying for. (Interview Preparation | Soft Skills and Behavioral Skills Training, New Delhi)

d) Work for an NGO.

e) Post your resume here.

All the best! Do read my story of fighting bi-polar disorder here. (About Atul | Soft Skills and Behavioral Skills Training, New Delhi).

@ Nathrao
I did mention that. Was looked down upon with pity. Sadly it didn't work.
@ Shady HR
Reason for Depression :
Personal - Failed Love affair. Death of Father.
Appreciate your input.
I am working on developing the soft skills and persona to prepare for future obstacles and challenges.

I like your interview questions and the way to handle it.
Thank You

Thank you for the offer. I have saved your number.
My resume does get noticed and I do get interview calls for the same.
Its the face to face interviews wherein I am asked to elaborate the unemployment gap leaves me unprepared.
