Dear Seniors, I have around 16 years of work experience in different industries working as EA with HR, Admin, and Purchase experience also. I had quite an MNC 2 years before since they changed their location. Immediately after which I joined this present startup Software company taking charge of the operations and working part-time. I am in the look of another job with my previous experience since the present company has not got any project in the past 2 years. I feel my experience is going futile and getting demotivated. Kindly guide me if I can add my present work experience in my CV since they are paying very less than my earlier salary and it’s a part-time job.

Your CV should be a truthful depiction of your qualifications, achievements and jobs.
Even part time experience can be shown.
Eventually every employer will see your capability in the interview, regardless of any achievement you may write and having clear knowledge on the subject matters which form part of cv will be a plus point.
for example I had done a full time course on UNIX,but I never lay stress on that aspect since I dont have much practical experience of working on UNIX,though technically I have fully recognised certification on UNIX.
so one must be very choosy and correct in making CV.
Simple and short covering your qualification, experience and achievements should be the guiding principle of making a CV.

Dear Mr.Nathrao,
Thanks for your reply. To get little more clarification I want to know if I am applying for purchase related jobs my current job role of operations will support my cv? How can I tackle the interviewer. Also, I am not getting any calls / interviews from recruiters. In the job portals I have not filled current employer and its empty. There is around 2 years gap. In my present role there is 0 value addition to add in the CV that is the reason I want to leave this job.
Kindly advise.

Probably develop the link between purchase and operations.Operation tells the purchase department about what item, quality and time they want.So this link is what you can use to show that an operation man can very well be in purchase.all he has to learn is the purchase procedure-quotations,selection of vendor etc. That is easily understandable.Being an operation man will help you in purchase decisions-like what to buy, what quality etc
Is there any harm in showing your part time job?
I dont think so.
It takes time to get a suitable job,so keep applying and calling up recruiters.

Dear Mr.Nathrao,
Thanks for replying me again. Since I have no job or nothing to do in the present company and there are only 2-3 freshers working here I try to keep myself little busy by soft skill training and knowledge sharing to these technical freshers. The job role is not having any link with purchase so I have this doubt of adding my present company to the CV. Also I am worried if am not showing my present employer, my CV will display 2 years without any job which will keep me away from the recruiters.

Hello Anonymous,
Like Nathrao mentioned, it doesn't create any issues/problems if you show the present Part-time exp in your resume.
Rather it would create fresh problems if you DON'T....one of which you have already realized.
Any specific reason(s) for your focus on Purchase jobs?
What's the breakup of your total 16 yrs exp in different areas? Suggest focus on THAT AREA where you can backup with solid exp AS WELL AS in which you have confidence you can handle the I/Vs. You haven't mentioned your Qualifications.
All the Best.

Dear Mr.Tajsateesh,

Thank you for your reply.

The reason for looking for purchase job is that I am interested to work in that domain now.

I have been working as Executive Assistant for 16 years along with which I got the opportunity to work in Purchase department. So the total16 years include around 7 years of purchase experience also.

I have done M.A.(HR) and Post Graduate Dip in Materials Management.

My worry is the present job is not connected with neither secretarial role nor purchase and as I have mentioned above nothing to add value. Also the salary I am getting is very less when compared to my previous job.I was given assurance by the company heads' that soon they are going get lot of business opportunities. But nothing has come yet. The main reason I took the present part time job was that I can concentrate on my family side, which was needed at that point of time. Now am little free of personal commitments. Could you please guide if I show the present experience and present salary how can I justify the recruiters and how to mention in the job portals about my present salary.

Hello Anonymous,

"I am interested to work in that domain now" is NEVER a wise way of opting for careers.

Even though Interest plays an important role in career selection, you ALSO NEED TO COMBINE it with your capabilities/past-experience AND the effect in the long-term.

The role of Executive Assistant is not a bad one in any Organization--better stick to it. As you would be aware, Executive Assistants have exposure to a wide range of functions--including Purchase, Finance, etc--as a part of their jobs. But getting into the hardcore functional roles of any line would make your career graph 'look like' you didn't stick to any one role/function......am speaking form the Recruiter's perspective.

You surely have a very valid reason/justification to show your part-time exp ['I can concentrate on my family side, which was needed at that point of time']--leverage on it. And you can also mention that this exposure to the overall operations of an organization has given you the ability to view organizational situations/issues in a 360 deg way. At your level, this becomes a major PLUS [it may not be viewed the same way for a junior level employee]. Exposure to the operational/implementation side of decision-making for an Executive Asst is always a Plus.

Coming to your remark "Also the salary I am getting is very less when compared to my previous job", I am not sure as to how can you compare both--a part-time job salary will ALWAYS be lesser than a Full-time job.

So suggest don't focus excessively on this aspect--in your I/Vs suggest give BOTH the CTCs with clear demarcation of full-time & Part-time.

And pl be ready to be MENTALLY flexible on this aspect to begin with. Else the chances of spoiling the I/Vs will be high--the over-focus on the one factor/aspect is USUALLY @ the cost of focus on other aspects of a situation.

All the Best.
