I have 4 years experince in HR into Recruitment in a BPO sector working for 2 different corporates. Recently i have resigned from my last assignment. Currently i am getting offers from some good consultants for the same or a senior kind of role for the same recruitment profile. Is it wise enough to move from a corporate set up to a consultancy?? Or would it be a kind of depromotion in my carreer. Kindly advise...

Hi Varshue,
I think it depends on the Consultancy that you are been offered, go for those who has already got a hold in the market, never go consultancies who have just started up their business or completely new in any Industries, the reason being that is these type of Consultancies will give you additional responsibilities like BD and all that, which is certainly not bad thing but you wont be paid for it, and yes if you have got a chance to wok with Market leaders then definitely go for it as you will get a lot of exposure in the actual market trends rather than to be a fresh face, and yes of course its wise to move from a corporate to a reputed consultancy as you would have certain limitations in terms of Salary, growth and KRA's but in Consultancy you can earn as well as learn.
lastly in a consultancy you can earn a lot of incentives too which you would actually not get in any corporate firms.
I hope this would help you out in making a wise decision.

Hi Varshue,

You have to decide based on your long term goal.

My suggestion would be not to join if in a consultancy you are getting more or less the same profile.Reason for putting down your paper & your financial condition is not known to me. if you can wait till you can get any offfer from company will be good and advisable.Because even if you join any consultancy just for few months then also working there & managing leave for further interviews is going to be very difficult.Even let me tell you that work culture & work pressure in consultancy is very different from corporate. But, it is also true that there are very few consultancies which are organized and there policies are also very streamlined,so working in that can also be an option.

As you are having 4 years of experience in corporate, you can get lucrative offers from some of the consultancies. But as per my view you can only join if you are getting offer from brand name consultancy (if not even brand name, then as i said above a good consultancy) with some senior profile and good package.

Also you need to understand one thing that it's little difficult to enter from a consultancy to corporate.Although from a corporate to consultancy it's not difficult. So, do think about your future.

Also there is one saying that it's better to work in a consultancy with a good & challenging (team leader) profile rather than working in a big company with a very small profile.

Joining a consultancy will not make your career graph lean down, it's only which kind of consultancy and job profile you choice.

Good Salary is not always every thing work environment is also very important.

I have tried to explain you all the things ( it's pros & cons)..................... So, based on your present circumstance you can decide whether you need to join a consultancy or wait for some time for a company offer.

All The Very Best.

Hi Varshue,
Unless you are desperate for job, please don't switch to consultancy. It would hinder switch later in your career walk.

Hello Varshue,

There are NO 'right' or 'wrong' ways of handling such situations. It all depends on WHAT YOUR CAREER PRIORITIES are.

Your experience so far has been into Recruitment. Many HR professionals wish to move towards Core HR/Generalist roles @ this stage of his/her career, while some like to stick to Recruitment. Each one's reasons for a decision are typically UNIQUE & can't be taken as the Bible--ONLY for guidance.

In general, for a long-term career in Recruitment, Consultancies are invariably the Best. This is because any Corporate recruitment role [irrespective of designation] essentially is limited to the needs of THAT COMPANY, whatever be the domain. While the focus in any Consultancy [the larger or more professional ones, NOT the small-time ones, like other members already mentioned] essentially HAS TO BE much larger cutting across domains/sectors, by virtue of their business model. This would enable you to add a lot of value [from the Recruitment exp point-of-view] to your resume.

However, IF your goal is to move into Core HR roles along your career path, then Consultancies are NOT the right ones for you--UNLESS the job role involves handling clients to formulate their HR Practices too [which only the large Consultancies are involved in].

All the Best.
