Dear Rahul,

When you say canteen facility, you mean the food quality or other facilities like proper seating arrangement and the lilke?

In most of the companies I visit as Consultant, I see them letting this on contract. They fix a good contractor and they take care of everything.

Management's co-operation and contribution play a vital role in such labour welfare facilities. When I was in DCW Limited, we did a lot of improvements over the period (ours is a management subsidized co-operative canteen - workers' strength is 700 plus 250 staff) such as converting the kitchen into centralized steam cooking one, bought fridges, deep freezers etc., to store milk and perishables, providing new fibre glass tables and chairs, dish washers, wall mounted industrial fans besides ceiling fans, Effluent Treatment Plant, kitchen garden, LCD TVs and music system etc.

We appointed two masters to prepare variety food at higher salary. However, the Management should help you for all these. Lest, fix a good experienced contractor (there are plenty in the market who have experience in industrial canteens) and just monitor.

Before taking any improvement action, please consult your Unions (if you have).

I am happy that you focus on this - good food will always keep our workforce faithful to us - Rane and TVS groups of companies concentrate more on this aspect.

all the best to you,

Ganesh Ramachandran

Normally the canteens are runby canteen committees consisting of reppresenatives of employers and employees or any department that runs it. You need to submit a grievance letter to this committee/department clearly listing out the areas and food items that need to be improved soa s to enable them to address the specific issues. You can also make it as part of agenda for discussion in the periodical meetings to b eheld between the unions and the company so that it attracts the attention of HR and there will be some decision on the issues in teh agenda.

Dear Mr. Rahul,
You need to understand whether the quality difference is accepted by your Management. If so, you need to convince your Management. If not, being a member of HR/Admin Department, you can take up the matter with the vendor directly or through your Department Head. In my opinion, there should not any quality difference atleast in food for any category of employees after all, everry one works for the betterment of his or her Organization. Througout my career, I have never seen any difference in quality whether you have canteen committee or not.

Workers are back bone of the company.

We need to provide Proper Canteen Facilities for them and it's a Statutory requirement also.

Form a Canteen Committee. The Senior Workers and especially complaining natured workers also to be as members in that committee.

As you said the staff canteen is good. The same caterer also to be appointed for Workmen Canteen.

Clear Menu to be decided with the concent of the Workers Canteen Committee and senior workers.

Don't think that the workmen canteen in the angle of commercial.

Quality food grains to be utilised and hygienic standards to be maintainined on regular basis.

Subsidiary rates to be introduced. Complaint Book/Suggestion Box to be maintained.

Canteen means to have Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. The duration is max. 1 hour. If the worker spend morethan 1 hour in canteen comfortable. Other Workers cann't able to have their food. This will be badly effects on Productivity.

Commitment and Dedication orientation personnel to be appointed.

It shouldn't be monopoly and not related to the Management Members/Local Political Party/Trade Union.\

Admin/HR personnel keep on watching the Hygienic standards, Menu & Quality of Food on Daily basis.

Keep involve more in this activity.

We wish you all the best.

Thanking You,
