Hi
You have a classic dilemma. The candidate has met all your requirements and confirmed his availability for the interview so he cannot be faulted on that count.
However from a corporate culture point of view, his response would be an indicator of the possible mismatch that is likely to escalate over time. His job role and job function would also require the candidate to me more communicative, expressive and follow the accepted norms of corporate culture that your corporate values. Apparently even you as a Gen X person find it difficult to reconcile with the reply and it is possible that during the interview you may find the candidate very suitable but you may find his style, response and attitude unacceptable to your value system.
Not interviewing the candidate would be a wee bit unfair to the candidate but you still retain the right of rejecting him if he does not meet the standards and good fit acceptable to your corporate values, style and expectations.

Dear Ravi,
With his just one line reply, candidate's cavalier attitude is well visible. How to write leters is taught in school and colleges. Yet he does not want to implement his learning. What does this show?

It only shows that he is young and grown up using his mobile a lot and needs grooming. Like Jacob has said, he needs to be interviewed and, if found suitable for the job, needs to be educated (he could be qualified; needs to be educated).

Thanks to everyone for your replies,

Jacob He sure is invited for interview, this reply just clicked me so thought to take the peoples opinion, another thought came to my mind that whether i am becoming old that this language sounds unprofessional to me, or is this the norm going on.

The other replies i received were more professional, including replies indicating inability to attend :

Dear Sir/Mam

Thank you for shortlisting my resume for the interview , I would like to acknowledge that i would be present for the interview on the date mentioned

Thanking you

Regards

------------

Thank you for inviting for the personal interview. But I have my B.Tech final exams going on. Though I'm keen to join but I cannot attend. Please do notify if there is any postpone in interview date.

Thank you again!

and others so when a email is sent to candidates of same age group depending on their brought up we get to see different replies to emails, but that person doesnt know that this mobile sms language might not help in his career growth

Dear Mr. Ravi,
There is nothing to worry about. To be honest, majority of the Gen X freshers will respond in similar way because, they are not taught about IMPORTANCE OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS in CORPORATE WORLD. They also have no idea about EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS as most of the educational institutions are not giving prominence to SOFT SKILLS & BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS except conducting sessions for formality reasons.
For your kind information, every month i train PROJECT ENGINEERS, DEPARTMENT STAFF, SR. EXECUTIVE on SOFT SKILLS & BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS (Drafting LETTER/EMAILS/REPORTS). Even today, i am surprise to note that, there are no changes in their drafting style. It the organisation that needs to foster A CULTURE supporting SOFT SKILLS and BUSINESS COMMUNICATION SKILLS(written).
I would request you to address him about your expectations. This will help to understand your organisation's culture.
With profound regards

Well Sir, i somewhere dont agree with X & Y generation Concept.....i myself belong to the same generation (Y), but would never had replied to my prospective recruiter in that ways.
Infact i find that guy very immature or else careless would be a right and apt word for him....
But never mind if he is worth of job we should give him a chance...but as some of us said he would be needing a lot of grooming....

i am glad you shared this for discussion ravi. where hr is concerned, the more we are able to explore issues, the better we will be able to do our job effectively. this situation is a clear indicator that more and more, things are not as black and white as we would like -there are definite shades of grey that have to be considered. it is imperative that we keep context in mind and not stay rigid and traditional - however, it is also important that we not lose sight of what our expectations are. it would be great if we manage both!
