This query is for my friend, who is an accounting & finance graduate, MBA-in Finance with work experience of 2.5 yrs in finance. He has got inclined towards marketing as his 40 % job was related to marketing & PR. Now he wants to make career in marketing and is working as Business development Executive since 6 months. Should he take up some course in marketing simultaneously to have a strong stand in Indian and overseas job market of one year any PG /Diploma or do master’s in marketing? To grow faster, degree would help or only work exp would suffice. Please advice. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sara,
Yah definitely he must look for some course which will certainly give him knowledge and understanding. This will enhance his skill. As you said that he is already working as BDE since last six month, and have interest in this field, it is a right time to take steps toward this.
Ask him to go for distance marketing and business development course /PG Diploma which will show him the exactly what he need to do to establish himself or to make his career in this field. Also he will learn what works (and what doesn't), so he can get the Business Management/Development Skills and this will teach him how to design a marketing plan that meets the business goals, sales strategies and the confidence needed to build a referral network for long-term success.
He can do this with any reputed University.

Hi,
Marketing is purely a number / game of influence, person needs to have over all knowledge of the product, the market, competitors & a high negotiation skills.
I opine that going for MBAs etc better to attend some certificate course / training programs in Business development / sales / marketing.
A thorough knowledge on the product, market etc make sense. The employer looks at how much business they have done in the month / week / day, what is the ageing of the debtors, how much collected, % of commission offered, has he able to retain the existing customers, able to add new customers, has he able to improve the image of the company in the market, how many business promotion activities executed, what is the business against the promotion activities etc are important for the employer. How much increment / incentive / sales bonus he / she got is important for the employee.
