for customer's protection definitely consumer protection act is the guiding force..
hwoever there are other laws too like "Distance selling directive" if thhe company enagges in web/catalog/ tele sales too
for security apart from patent/ traemark/ copyright acts.....
there are 3 main standards:
ISO 27001 (information security ms)
ISO 28001 (supply chain mgmt)
CTPAT(custom trade partnership against terrorism)..
out of this ISO 27001 is very comprehensive eg background check/ workplace surveillance is just 1 of the 127 controls specified...

Re: legal compliances for retail industry
Hi.... there are different kinds of licenses/permissions/NOC's from different authorities which are required tobe procured at the time of opening/during the running of retail store. You need to specify the kind of products you would be dealing & there are requirements of monthly/half yearly/rearly comlainces which you need to look into.We are handling licences/statutory complainces of world's biggest retail chain of stores in northern India while we based at Gurgaon. You can contact us on 09212220044 for any clarification-Rajesh Gupta
