The following are the major initiatives taken by our management:
1. Implementing the concept of "Safety is Line Management Responsibility".
2. Safety Audit (Contract Field Safety Audit with severity rating) by Line Engineers & Managers.
3. Safety Observation by Top Management Executives emphasising on Behavioural Changes.
4. Ensuring the availability of quality PPE to all the workers according to the job requirement.
5. Morning TBT in each section covering all the employees, conducting by immediate site supervisor or engineer.
6. Penalty Close on contractors against safety non-compliance.
7. Etc.

Importance of a study on managerial strategies for not using PPE will show that most managements are not serious about safety. Most CEOs will find time only to inaugurate few functions like safety training for senior staff, celebration of Safety day etc. They will not be able to find time for safety unless it is a case of fatality. Responsibility for safety is entirely left with safety officers. In some companies safety officers are even found doing other jobs which has absolutely no connection with safety. Appointment of safety officer is statutory requirement and hence they are there.
Think how many cases of disciplinary actions are initiated in your company for non usage of PPE ?
Disciplinary action has to be initiated not for non-usage of PPE as such. Not using PPE provided for safety of the employee is a serious misconduct and as such disciplinary action is to be initiated for misconduct. Even union will not be able to stand on the way as it is a safety issue.
Safety Officers have to be serious and convince HRM and executives to realize the importance of safety and change the present strategies to achieve result.

Hello Dipil,
I insert the safety obligations that employees must comply with within their contract of employment and simply instruct all staff to comply with this lawful instruction.
I developed the companies safety policy that the CEO signed which includes a statement concerning adhering to safety guidelines
Furthermore, under the Federal Australian safety act employees must follow the employers instructions, which places an obligation upon staff to wear PPE otherwise they can be prosecuted.
I also include wearing PPE within the staff code of conduct.
Lastly, I encourage staff to pro-actively manage their own safety by recognising and rewarding them for actively supporting the policy
Considering these issues I have never experienced a problem with any of my staff (over 400)

Management systems differ from industry to industry. Of late modern managements started considering safety as a good business practice. They pay more attention and heed all the advice from safety department and implement suitable strategies. How ever few are still to realize the imporatnce of safety. Their safety standard is low. Safety department is ineffective. Safety officers struggle with every issue. Safety staff has no voice. Slowly safety staff become ineffctive. In most cases safety staff are finding it difficult to kill their duty hours. No one is accountable.
Again it is the caliber of the safety staff. A good safety man visualises even strategies to convince top managements. He seriously implement safety measures. For him it is easy and his directives are strictly adhered to. He will have no grievences. He achieves result. And he will be always busy. He loves his profession.
I emphasis that failure of safety management is for the weakness of the safety staff. Their inability to to convince management. Instead of advising the management on safety matters as an expert; they just do what management tells them to do - may be for survival I presume. This approach has to change.
Instead of expressing helplessness let safety officers be strong with expertise. They will succeed.

i strongly agree with Mr.Kesava Pillai. Since i am a safety Professional i can able to understand the real time difficulties for implementing safety.. most of the companies are thinking that usage of PPE is alone safety . But its not that case, when an organisation want to really implement safety it has to be brought along with their process(Process oriented safety). otherwise the scope of the safety officer is always " safety staff are finding it difficult to kill their duty hours "...
Many industries are at all involving safety Professionals on therir process activities or changes. and if any thing went wrong finally the blame come to the safety officer only for his inefficency.
So this is more about the "Mind change of the management" for involving the safety as a part of their Process....

Please let me know that how many Indian Companies appointing a Qualified Safety Officers... In my experiaence most of the Indian companies, just for the sake of statuatory requirement appointing a Safety Officer... However if they are experts and having skills to convince the mgt., in such a situation who will listen his words... To whom he supose to convince to get the changes/improvements in the safety management system...
Untill and unless the management is committed towards safety, nothing is going to change... Even in the presence of an Expert Safety Professional in the management... Or else the statuatory part must change... It must become in such a way that it may not allow companies to think to avoid safety.... then surely change will come...
