SMILE - just requires few muscles than a frown.. :D .. One of the most important non-verbal gesture of a good & succesful leader.. Well more than that we all need to smile more..it is said that it is infectious..hence smile more n your boss would catch it as well.. :D :D "Without knowing the force of words it is impossible to know men." - Confucius To deliver the full impact of a message, use nonverbal behaviors to raise the channel of interpersonal communication: Eye contact: This helps to regulate the flow of communication. It signals interest in others and increases the speaker's credibility. People who make eye contact open the flow of communication and convey interest, concern, warmth, and credibility. Facial Expressions: Smiling is a powerful cue that transmits happiness, friendliness, warmth, and liking. So, if you smile frequently you will be perceived as more likable, friendly, warm and approachable. Smiling is often contagious and people will react favorably. They will be more comfortable around you and will want to listen more. Gestures: If you fail to gesture while speaking you may be perceived as boring and stiff. A lively speaking style captures the listener's attention, makes the conversation more interesting, and facilitates understanding. Posture and body orientation: You communicate numerous messages by the way you talk and move. Standing erect and leaning forward communicates to listeners that you are approachable, receptive and friendly. Interpersonal closeness results when you and the listener face each other. Speaking with your back turned or looking at the floor or ceiling should be avoided as it communicates disinterest. Proximity: Cultural norms dictate a comfortable distance for interaction with others. You should look for signals of discomfort caused by invading the other person's space. Some of these are: rocking, leg swinging, tapping, and gaze aversion. Vocal: Speaking can signal nonverbal communication when you include such vocal elements as: tone, pitch, rhythm, timbre, loudness, and inflection. For maximum teaching effectiveness, learn to vary these six elements of your voice. One of the major criticisms of many speakers is that they speak in a monotone voice. Hello Pals !!! Smile is a very important tool in one's hand. A smile can totally disarm an infuriated person and save many a situations from going worse. A smile is not merely a twitching of facial muscles. A genuine one, particularly at difficult times keep cool around. You feel at home with some persons even before knowing them whereas you are put off by othes. The former surely have an affectionate smile and a positive attitude. Such people are great and a real pleasure to work with. The others fit the description of being 'Ravan', I saw in some Hindi film not able to recollect its name. The charisma of great leaders had an innocent smile (Mahatma Gandhi), warmth (Pandit Nehru) a mischievous one (Rajiv Gandhi) Years have rolled by. Still monlisa is known for the smile. Research say that a child smiles almost 30 times as that of an adult. That's quite a profound statistic considering our rate of smiling has dwindled so fast , considering we were also children some time back in time. Reason is that as a child you have a fascination to the world around you which over a period of time loses its sheen. Its important as adults that we smile more often. On the hindsight why have we stopped laughing? Fear of Rejection. Because we dont have a valid reason.......... the list goes on but the fact of the matter remains that our excuses as good as they seem might not be real. So what am i getting to; we have enough reasons to smile if you really want to. As a leader you deal with people and unfortunately people dont come with start and stop buttons. It becomes imperative hence to smile. Have a day filled with smiles.......... because smile has a double effect of making you and others around you happy. warm regards John Savio
