"Sabbatical Leave" means, in short, the extended absence in the career of an individual to fulfill some goal of his or her choice like writing a book or travelling extensively for research. This is also called as career break, gap year etc.
The term " Sabbatical" comes from the Old Testament practice of letting fields fallow every seven years.
Hence some employers include sabbatical leave in their leave policy for enabling their employees of certain category to have the opportunity of taking a break from their job for a predetermined time period to develop their careers. Thus it has got the ingredients of purpose, compensation and a definite period of prior service under the same employer.
The purpose of sabbatical leave should be closely related to the career of the employee.
It can be a paid leave or unpaid leave of absence keeping the lien of service intact.
The prior service in the organization required for this leave may vary from 3 to 6 years in general.
Similarly, the duration of the sabbatical leave may also vary from 3 months to one or two years depending on its purpose.
