Dear madam colleague,
The probation period is included in the appointment letter which is usually 3 months for worker category ( As per standing orders) and for others 6 months by practice. But for non- workman category it could be for 6 months or an year .
Six to one year period is good enough to assess the suitability and any period longer than this is unfair.

If the Order of Appointment has the word "initial period" of probation mentioned, then the employer has the freedom to extend the probation. However, it can not be done endlessly and specific bench-mark performance criterion should be fixed for the staff to comply within a stipulated time period, after which the employment may have to be either confirmed or terminated appropriately.
