I have a genuine query which I very recently come across and I solicit some views on the same from the learned experts of this community.
During generation of new a UAN for a new employee giving Mobile No is not mandatory. So suppose if the employer skips giving the mobile no or if unknowingly gives a wrong mobile no what will be the consequences.
The employee on the other hand does this job for a very short tenure probably less than a month and the UAN no is not mentioned in his pay slip. And then he left. Even if he doesn't have the UAN he has the option of getting his UAN no using "Know your UAN" facility under epfo member portal where he has to put Aadhar/PAN, Name, DOB and mobile no (Remember all of these are mandatory to put to retrieve UAN no).
Now if the employer puts a wrong mobile no or doesn't put a mobile no at all my query is does the employee still get his UAN no by putting his own mobile no? (I'm assuming the mobile no that he has put is different than the employer had put at the time of generation the UAN)
My understanding is YES, even if the mobile no doesn't match he can get his UAN no as the mobile no is used only to send the PIN. Name, DOB, KYC data have to match with EPFO records, but if the employer did a mistake by putting wrong mobile no the employee can still retrieve his UAN from "Know your UAN" using his original mobile no.
I'm looking forward to receive some views on the same. I have not put this discussion forward for my own learning purpose, I have seen 2 cases where the ex employer didn't give the UAN and the employees are still finding it hard to retrieve their UANs.
Can someone throw some light on this topic please.

Dear Friends,
I too have a similar problem. few employees do not have their mob. numbers registered with EPFO and the "missing detail" link on the EPFO unified portal does not give facility to update mob. no. / email id.
Can the mob number be registered now with a joint declaration by employee / employer (just like the joint declaration for minor correction in name)?
Is there any way to incorporate the employee mob no. / email id in their PF accounts?
As regards Mr. Arnab's query, this is my opinion:
(a) The previous employer has no business to withhold the UAN / ESI IP numbers from their employees. The employee should approach the previous employer again formally with a letter / email and possibly followed up by your company.
(b) As a policy, it is best to populate all fields in EPFO / ESI portal (even which are not mandatory) so that the records are complete and correct as on the date of enrollment. I have started ensuring it in my organisation; and such enrollments are done in presence of, and details verified by, the new employee during his induction process. (I have felt that, at the working level, the attitude towards such enrollments have been lackadaisical resulting in problems later for the employee... Just my feeling ...)

mobile no given or given wrong does not matter unless the employee activates his UAN. at the time of submission of mobile the portal asks for correct mobile no and on successful OTP the given mobile is auto populated in UAN
employer has least role in the mobile activation, it is fully in hands of employee
