Hi,
HR department has issued a memo to restrict employees play games, FB, etc.. during office hours recently. However, this memo do not show any improvement to those who play always. Moreover, these employee have exceed our tolerance level cause they bring bad influence to others employees and seriously affect their work performance.
Please advice.

Dear SronChu,

Employees play games, FB etc because they have time to do it. Have you done their workload analysis? Secondly, have you given the personal feedback to the employees? Rather than issuing official memo, it is important to obtain agreement from the employees to ensure that they spend their time in quality activities rather than games and FB.

Thirdly, you may curtail access to social media. But then social media is not bad per se. How one utilises is important. For this, you may identify some computers which will have access to social media. Employees can spend some time in accessing FB or playing games. However, it should be for short duration.

Nevertheless, yours is cultural issue. Problems of this kind arise when companies do not have culture of learning or culture of innovation. Self-learning is always best learning. Give employees target that for each quarter they must master one particular skill and their exam will be conducted at the end of each quarter. Alternative to this is to give target to employees to come up with something new every quarter. Thirdly, give incentives to the employees for implementing learning. They should be encouraged to take out knowledge from the books and put it into day to day practice. This is no easy task.

Thanks,

Hi, Does every work can be done with workload analysis? For example, IT programmer. Maybe it is cultural issue but it only happens in 1 department. Thank you Sronchu

There are softwares available to give / restrict internet access, ask your IT Team to look into it, we are using cyberoam firewall & IMS, everyone got his own login and password, you may be allowed internet but I may not have access to FB et all sites,,,
Use technology to maximum benefit to check whos doing what,,

Most of the organisations block the social networking sites as said by Ravi. In lighter note, how do you access CiteHR during office hrs? Pon

Dear,
Mr Diwakar has given very valid suggestions. I would like to add a few :-
1. You can jam the social and restricted sites from the central server. It is also possible that your office staff have access to some restricted sites. Such access adds to your cost and persuades them to neglect work and surf net.
2. You can make sitting arrangement such that one senior level executive or Supervisor sits amongst them. This will restrict them to get off the work place very often to get indulged in activities other than which are productive or for knowledge enhancing.
3. Time limit can be fixed for execution/completion of work, failing which incentive curtailment, its impact on annual CR rating etc. can be informed to them so that they may improve.
Hope these steps if can be implemented, will show results.
Best wishes.

Yes, the complete solution to your problem is :
1. Make restrictions on net-surfing through system itself. In many offices, even yahoo mail, gmail etc is also not accessible.
2. Make sitting arrangements in such a way that PC monitor can be seen from anywhere.
3. Cameras in office can be adjusted specially for these nuisance employees.
In each office, there are people, who do not bother for warnings etc, and for such kind of acts, no punishments can be laid down.

Hi SronChu
Some more points :
a) Does your memo specify the punishment also ? If so, has the same been given ?
b) How do you measure the productivity of these workers ? Are they fine on those parameters ?
c) If they are fine on productivity, maybe you need to "incentivise" them by " allowing" them to use FB etc. for a designated time ? During such time perhaps they can like your Company FB page too, post good stuff about it ..etc... :-) And if they are not then of course set an example by appropriate punishment.
d) As said by others too, use " site blockers" and other such devices.
