A genuine employer does not indulge such a unethical practice if there are policies in HR department. I have conducted hundreds of employment verification since 7 years for a large company having a large NBFC share in the market. So far we have come out with original and field reports only. Nothing is based or could be obtained with Pan Card which is govt regulated. It is an immatured, unprofessional and childish to think that PAN card may be used as a tool for verification of many of private information which is not needed for job.
In this public forum many members just like that post some query, without basic knowledge, home work and even display their personal data and their company name.

how to get employees previous company name based on there PAN number....
This is the thread name to which I replied. Nowadays it is difficult to participate in the discussion due to technical problems in your cite. I participate only when I feel that thread is worth the salt or having larger interests in the community. If you can please post my reply/views in the relevant thread and oblige.
Many of the writers in this forum want quick fix to all their issues. From the replies one could understand that their unnecessary rush in getting answers/sollutions. I am in your group since 2008, the volume of participation has grown but quality threads or discussion rarely comes up. Please do some thing with your team.
Best Regards.

First of all, if you have to do the verification from the ex-employer of your new joinee , that itself proofs the genuineness of his having worked there in the capacity which is surely one of the factors you have selected him for. That covers his education, experience ,criminal background. The ex-employer certainly would'nt have engaged him for say one year or more otherwise. As far as the remuneration is concerned, what if he's paid more than what you are paying?
All this verification process suggested about writing to universities, speaking to neighbours, getting his bank statement posing as a loan agent etc is quite intrusive and underhand.Unless it is for crucial positions involving perhaps security of the nation :-)
In a private sector firm,You need a performer and thats the bottom line, why all the detective role.Talent as it is is scarce.
