Realizing your goals
Personal Development Goals always come first, not because we are selfish but because we must improve ourselves before we can be of benefit to others. It is recognized that we can only love others to the extent that we love ourselves. Personal Development Goals can include committing to an exercise plan, increasing your spirituality, quitting a bad habit, and eating better, etc. These Personal Development Goals are the cornerstone to you reaching all other goals.
Family/Relationship Goals are the reasons we strive towards reaching all other goals. Anthony Robbins says, “The quality of our relationships is directly proportionate to our success and happiness in life.” It is well known that loneliness and unhappiness due to the lack of strong relationships is a stressor, which leads to immune system breakdown and unnecessary illness. Many goal setters leave out this extremely important and urgent area of goal setting, which has an important impact in our lives.
Material/Fun Goals, like Family/Relationship Goals create the desire to work your hardest to achieve all of your goals. And besides, all work and no play leaves us tired and burnt out. These goals should be things such as cars; a home, a dream home, an exotic vacation, clothes and other material things that you really want to have or do. With your Material/Fun Goals it is still important to set realistic goals that can be achieved to build greater confidence, however, for setting one or two long-term, outrageous material goals will not be harmful, rather, it could be very stimulating. Remember, this is an area to really have fun and set some targets that will really motivate you.
Career/Education/Learning Goals is a goal setting area where you can really commit to improving your life. If you are committed enough anything is truly possible. It is strange but a proven fact that many people will work at the same job for 10 or 20 years and never really commit to being the very best they can be, or to continual improvement at their chosen career. Of course committing to continual improvement will almost insure that you won’t be in the same job for 10 or 20 years, but rather teaching or managing others in your area of expertise. Being a lifetime learner is important to continual growth for persons of all ages. As a senior citizen continual learning or continuing a part-time career is synonymous with continuing to get the most out of life.
Financial Goals are a necessary component to financial freedom. Writing down and committing to how much, how fast and where to invest is critical in realizing your financial future. Zig Ziglar says, “money isn’t as important as oxygen, but it’s a relatively close second”. He also says, “people who lie about not wanting more money will lie about other things too”. Set realistic but exciting financial goals and your chances of reaching them increase five-fold. There are certain dynamics set in place as soon as you start to set goals and start moving toward them.
Staying on Course
Once you have decided your first set of plans, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your to-do list on a daily basis. Periodically review the longer-term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience.
Setting Goals Effectively
The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective goals:
:arrow: State each goal as a positive statement: Express your goals positively - 'Execute this technique well' is a much better goal than 'Don't make this stupid mistake'
:arrow: Be precise: Set a precise goal, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you will know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it.
:arrow: Set priorities: When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.
:arrow: Write goals down: this crystallizes them and gives them more force.
:arrow: Keep operational goals small: Keep the low-level goals you are working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward. Derive today's goals from larger ones.
:arrow: Set performance goals, not outcome goals: You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. There is nothing more dispiriting than failing to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control. These could be bad business environments, poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals and draw satisfaction from them.
:arrow: Set realistic goals: It is important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (parents, media, society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. Alternatively you may be naïve in setting very high goals. You might not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how many skills you must master to achieve a particular level of performance.
:arrow: Do not set goals too low: Just as it is important not to set goals unrealistically high, do not set them too low. People tend to do this where they are afraid of failure or where they are lazy! You should set goals so that they are slightly out of your immediate grasp, but not so far that there is no hope of achieving them. No one will put serious effort into achieving a goal that they believe is unrealistic. However, remember that your belief that a goal is unrealistic may be incorrect. If this could be the case, you can to change this belief by using imagery effectively.
