Even though a single contribution didn't pay, claim for EDLI exist.
If he has enrolled to EPF/EDLI by filling Form-5 and has worked for just one day, he is eligible to get compensation from EDLI, provided employer is prompt and regular in their remittance.

Dear Sridhar,
As per my knowledge If an employee dies during employment his nominee of family member gets an amount equal to average balance in the PF account of the deceased employee during last 12 months. If such balance is more than 35,000 the insurance amount is payable is 35,000 + 25% of the excess amount of 35,000/- subject to overall limit of Rs. 60,000/- (Recently Govt. has made some changes in this regard. kindly find the attachment)
If the employees are covered under another life insurance scheme whose benefits are better than this scheme an exemption from this scheme can be obtained.
For recent changes kindly find the attached document.
