Hi Kavita,
You can organise following by dividing staff into different teams :
Diwali based fashion show.
Comic skits (spoofs on tv serials, ad. movies)
Rangoli competion using deeyas, bulbs, etc (related to diwali).
And ofcourse asking the employees to be in traditional wear and then chosing best dressed male and best dressed female

Hi Kavita,
What we guys do is organize a small diwali mela in our office. We get some food caterers to set up some small little stalls for exciting food and have some stalls to play games like card games , puzzle solving , huddle game etc.We also call a photographer to click photographs. We get the entire office decorated with flowers and lights.Every body is dressed in an indian outfit. On the main reception area we get a professional rangoli made and decorate them with diya's and all .Its always fun to do all this a day before diwali.

Employee get together to facilitate exchange of greetings, Lighting the lamp to signify the bright future for every body, Sharing significance of Diwali Festival, Sharing future over all perspective of the the business. Silver Lakshmi coin to each and every employee and an High Tea. These are all some ideas only, you can add much more to this. You can allot just one hour for this function.

Don't you think its ridicules?
What is the difference in workplace your private affairs. Do you except employee publicly disclose their emotions and prefernces.
India is great country with multi cultural, religion, lingustiics and regional festivity.
All these are private affairs are for celebrating at home with close freinds, relatives and family members. Public display at office or work place limited to greetings is gesture of your socializing. But that should not be officially promoted as ritual or mandatory event.

We organize housie/ tambola every year on the occasion of Diwali and give away Electronic items as gifts to the employees....People actually look forward to this day and await eagerly to play the game....Also, we do a snacks party while palying so everyone enjoys it to the fullest..

Dear Sawant this is not ridicules!!

This is the only way to celebrate the festival with the colleagues as a family member. Think abut those companies who have 24/7 environment, there employees are not suppose to go home for celebrating with the family members. This is the only way to give them environment as they are in home.

Seeing the smile on the faces of employees is the duty of HR.

Those Who Work 24/7 Are Bad Organizations And Those Who Spread This Concept Are Bad Hr Practises.
Except Some Industrial Nature Activities Such As Oil & Gas Offshore Exploration Or Space Aviation Etc, Can Be Understood For Working 24/7 But Not Commercial/industrial Entity.
Celebrations In Office Should Be For Success And Achievements Not For Festivity Or Cultural Events. We Have Many Festivals Exclusive For Women Cannot Be Celebrated In Office.
This Is Ridicules

Mr. Sawant first of all your language is not professional. We are not talking about individual. We are talking about celebrating Diwali festival. I seem that you have some problem with celebrating Diwali festival. Am I right??. If not then why you use this kind of language and one thing more that you are not suppose to stop any one to celebrate any festival.

Dear Mr. Sawant,

It seems staying in Saudia Arabia, yoy have restricted yourself too much. It seems you have forgotten to even display your emotions like happiness, brother hood, oneness etc. publicly. You make it seem as if celebrating a festival is a big crime.

Remember the adage "All work & no play makes Jack a ......." One's workplace is not supposed to be detention camp where people are supposed to come keep a straight face and just do nothing but work & leave.

Only if there is some camaraderie between the staff will they actually enjoy their work & be more productive. Celebrating a festival like Diwali goes a long way in building up this spirit of brotherhood, unity etc. & it gives the employees' a feeling that their organization does not treat them as just machines but as human beings and do care for their happiness & well being.

If you have any contrary opinions you are free to follow them but please do not try to impose your views on others. Do take care of your languge while writing it might sound offensive to others.
