Age has a definite impact on employment & effectiveness.
Certain posts require maturity level & understanding which have a direct relationship with age.
Certain posts may not be suitable for aged persons since the issues like energy levels, risk bearing attitude & gelling with the group demographics etc. would be relevant.
As HR professional we need to understand the requirement with clarity & with out any psychological barriers.

As long as the individual is ready to serve the company and bring in gowth, she should be absorbed in the company. Young blood definitely has the fire, the hunger to achieve better in tough situations and hence become choice of many business development organisation. Age can matter but not fully.
There might come very few jobs where industry experience for some years is needed. In such a case a rookee even though who has potential cannot be hired. In such a case we can take a chance of hiring the rookee for a longer probation period (but cannot take a chance during the recession as it migt turn into a cost rather that profit).
This does not mean that age becomes the criterion of rejection.
A balanced approach of selection has to be taken to get the right fit be it young or elderly, the ROI of the company needs to be computed.

All depends upon organizational culture and policies
Organizational policeis :- if you have ever read TOI (Ascent). In some of the post they have given age limit. Below aged person are not qualified for the interview. Depends upon organizational policies. Some post requires maturity like a person has worked at the post of officer and he is directly given a post of Manager than i don,t think their will be much maturity in taking decisions. This is the reason some of the organization have strict policies towards age limit.
Organizational culture:- If the organization employees are to mature to support a underage person whom they have to report than i think their will be no issue in hiring a person of under age.

Law of our land prohibits employment under 18 years of age. Hence, your employer is justified in terminating her services.
But this situation has to be handled carefully so as not to break the confidence of someone who is just entering or will enter the corporate world.
She must be clearly told that due to an oversight this appointment has happened, which is illegal, and that she can be on board only when he completes 18 years of age. See her off in good humour. And yes, remove all traces of this appointment from your official records.
