ESTABLISHMENTS WITH 10 EMPLOYEES LIKELY TO BE COVERED UNDER PROVIDENT FUND

The government is considering a reduction in the ceiling on the number of employees in an establishment eligible to be covered under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from 20 to 10, a move that is expected to being another 50 lakh employees under the EPF net.

BASIC WAGES TO BE REDEFINED

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has recommended the Labour Ministry that the 'basic wages' be redefined under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions (EPF & MP) Act, 1952. It is pertinent to mention here that the Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Madras High Courts have enlarged the scope of 'basic wages' as defined under section 2(b) of the Employees' Provident Funds and MP Act by treating all the allowances except House Rent Allowance to be wages for attracting provident fund contributions. Several appeals including Surya Roshni are pending in the Supreme Court for final verdict.

Rs. 15,000 PF CEILING, Rs. 1,000 PENSION IN TWO WEEKS

The Labour Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar on 24th June 2014 assured the Central representatives of the unions the decision to implement Rs.1,000 minimum monthly pension and higher monthly Provident Fund wage ceiling of Rs.15,000 would be announced within two weeks.

INSPECTION SCHEMES FOR PROVIDENT FUNDS & ESI

The Ministry of Labour and Employment on 21st June, 2014 has issued INSPECTION SCHEMES of Employees' Provident Fund and ESI with criteria of inspections i.e. mandatory inspections, optional inspections, methodology and general instructions which will curtail the frequent and irrelevant inspections by the concerned authorities.
