Just as way the HR works in the organisations u r very familiar with...[:P]
@ Sarah
If u r determined and hve that zeal, u can imprint ur existence in ur organisation.
Hiring right talent, traning them, formulatin employee friendly policies, having a right comp-ben module, are more subtle ways to make our presence felt.
Maintaining good employee relations, engaging emplyees in decision making and other activies, adding a "fun" factor to to work are more direct ways..
More innovative u r, more recognised u will be..
cheers

Hi Ezekiel,
I felt very sorry for Anurag Sharma who commented that there is nothing HR can do. This is how people without any passion for the HR job land up in HR as a last resort! These type of answers definitely make the new commers disillusioned in HR. My question is - What HR cannot do?
Firstly, the people who are in HR should believe that they can contribute to the Organisation in a very big way and HR is not just a Personnel Office or Labour Office who does recruitments and fires people whom the Organisation doesnot want. It all depends on the attitude of the HR Top Boss as to how the department should work. The whole atmosphere in the Organisation can be changed by the HR. Some of the things HR can do actively is good Employee relationship which really contributes to the productivity of the Organisation hence its growth, participation in the annual growth and planning of the organisation, employees personal and professional growth etc., More than anything you can being in HR can guide and help them grow in the profession. There are lot more things... but before I spell it out, I want to see what my other friends say about this.

My views :
1. Devise and implement HR systems.
2. Nowadays employees look at career growth. HR has to devise and implement career development plans for all employees.
3. Retaining talent and control attrition rate
4. Recruit right candidate for the right job - use good recruitment practices.
5. Good performance appraisal system with KRAs and goals..
6. Control HR cost of the organisation.
7. Help employee in their Income Tax matters
8. Implement innovative reward schemes
9. Counselling of employees
These are only few. Eventhough it may sound basic of HR function, its all depend on how we approach these functions. Rightly said by a member, a HR professional with passion will look avenues where he can contribute effectively to the organisation.
Now organisations look upto HR for various roles other than HR. In addition to core HR, I am handling Administration, co-ordination for IT dept and PR dept. I am also involved in employee taxation matters as I am responsible for their TDS.
Such involvement makes HR person a prominent in the organisation as Management look that person with respect while on the other side, it helps to build the rapport with the employees.
HAVE PASSION. THAT IS THE MANTRA.

Hello Sarah. If I had to say it in one sentence, I would say, “Work with all of the managers and supervisors in the organization so that they all become effective people managers.” The key to employee productivity and retention lies with the working relationship between each employee and their immediate manager and to a lesser extent with company policies and systems. Whatever you can do to help managers become effective leaders and team players will go a long way to leaving an indelible “HR” mark on your organization.

nothing :)
bcoz whatever HR does, there is something fishy in it, seen by employees..
Dear HRs
FUN IDEAS in office hamper the work of employees...
it takes an hour to arrange cricket match for HR,
but for employees its waste of whole day, and HR terms it as employee engagement, but who will compensate for time loss of employees wasted in fun , as the work will be pending there... then overtime ,, frustration as the HR always leaves on time and the employees cant..

HI
This is Tejesh, working as a HR in a Pharmaceutical Org.
I felt very bad with the words of Anurag Sharma, If he is a real HR Professional he would have not felt like that.
HR are the real Professional who will contribute a lot for their organizations. HR is the only person who will maintain good relations with all departments. Recruiting Right man for the right job, Growth Planning along with all HOD's, Planning Incentives for the employees and doing appraisals and recommending for salary hike to the employees, coordination with all Depts, formulating new innovative policies and Training the employees, organization recreational tours, Parties and games.
These are the only some of the things HR does in every organization.
regards
Tejesh.

Hello Sarah,
I saw in many of the replies to your question very good advice, but I have not seen the most practical one: Show your (HR's) impact on the bottom line. Though I am now an academic (in HR) I worked for 15 years in industry, therefore allow me to recommend a book which tells you how to measure HRM results and inform top management (and employees) how effective HR really is. Here is the book:
Jac Fitz-enz: How To Measure Human Resources Management, 3rd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2001.
Kind regards
Hermann

Hi Sarah,
The answer to your question is very simple, once you are in HR you are not supposed to be noticed, not being noticed just means that you are doing your job quite well.
If you can compare HR to a automobile, the function of HR is as simple as that of Engine Oil.
Reduce the friction between different parts and ensure that the entire machinery runs smoothly.
Now if you are looking for getting appreciated the following can be used as pointers.
The only way HR cannot be noticed in a firm is if it doesnt exist, I guess your problem lies with interactivity or communication problems with the rest of the firm, What you have to do is ensure that the next time you hire a HR personnel get someone outgoing and who can be more involved with the employees(a problem solver attitude person), also for your current problem just make sure that there are more events organized or if your firm allows you to be funny. Start putting up posts on your board or on your door what you did for someone each day, make it as funny as possible so that you dont hurt anyone.
The rest of the techinical solutions given has to be done by HR anyways.
Hope the above helps you sort out your issues.

Hi,
If you want to become good HR person, be a Business Partner, post your HR representative in Line function and be a Advisor, Strategic thinker, involve in the business meeting and advise the impact on manpower, concentrate on soft aspect like behaviour, attitude and how that liks to rentention and this contributes to the bottom line interms of benefits. If you talk about hard aspect like recruitment, payroll, admin etc. they will say this can be outsourced, most big organisations are success not because of the money power but because of people and that is our strength and we have to take care in a nice and professional way... HR can make the difference if you plan it properly and if you get your top officials recognistion and blessings that is lies on you
