I am doing MBA from NIILM university in New Delhi but I don't know all the fields of HR. I have opted for HR as a specialisation. Please help me with understanding within HR which industry is good for development and a better career. Please help me in gaining a deeper understanding and making better decisions for my future.

Hi,

HR has basically the following dimensions, namely:

- Recruitment & Selection

- Training & Development

- Organizational & Leadership Development

- Career & Performance Management

- Industrial Relations

Since you're a fresh graduate, it's not really possible on your part to know as yet your strengths and weaknesses unless you've worked in some of those HR dimensions. Once you work through them, you'll get to know what you can do best and which areas you need improvement. As a fresher, you may have to start as an implementor in an organization rather than play a strategic role. For now, start a career in Training & Development, Recruitment & Selection or Industrial Relations. These are the areas where an implementor faces lots of events that add up to his experiences.

Always have a 2-3 years career plan. For instance, within 10-12 years of your career in HR, you shall have to have experienced those 5 HR dimensions and end up becoming head of HR in an organization. Gain vigorous experiences within every 2 years in each HR dimension. Make it a target to meet.

Cheers,

Naved.
