Hi Lita:
Business training programs are all functional in nature and are core to meet specific business need. For e.g., a Quality Control Manager in BOOTS may require training in quality control without which, he may not be able to perform his very core responsibility, i.e., to ensure quality control. Such training programs are Business training. On the other hand, as a manager, he needs to have leadership and supervisory management skills. Training/Assignment that are intended to bring behavioral development are mostly called Development/Management Development programs. In the latter case, the training is a development program.
The basic relationship between business training and development program lies in the fact that skills will be driven by attitude or behavior. A quality control manager with skills in quality control may not be able to manage his responsibility just because he may not have the managerial skills to get work done by and through his subordinates. He needs to have the managerial attitude/behavior in order to implement his skills successfully. In simplier terms, development programs help drive skills obtained from business training.
Training is not always the only solution for performance improvement. Motivation plays a big role why and how an employee will perform irrespective of his technical/business expertise. Development programs intended for him will help him develop his own leadership capabilities to drive and take initiatives for improvement which will all translate into performance improvement. Such programs will act as a motivator for him and help him meet his career aspirations.
I guess these will give you some insight for dealing with your assignment.
Thanks,
