Hello all,
The staff in our office has celebrated a festival called ayutha puja* every year with a lot of fanfare. I have recently started the HR in the firm and am not comfortable with religion in the work place. No other festival is celebrated and I would like to take steps that ensure the working environment remains free of religion. Highly appreciate suggestions/adivse on how to deal with this situation
We are a 2 year old firm of about 100 people.

*Ayutha puja' - perform puja to the various instruments and equipments that help people work all through the year. After the puja and chanting of slokas, fruits and sweets are distributed among all present.

Are you from India. We all know the meaning of Ayudha Pooja. It has been celebrated across India, without any religion bar. Companies including other religions are celebrating this. Just because of one particular religion's chants are sung, that does not mean that is should be banned. If you are not interested in celebrating the festival stay away.
If we take that for argument, many Hindu companies are decorating their offices during Christmas, planting Christmas Tree and organizing a party to their employees on the eve of Christmas & New Year.
So better don't take this type of silly arguments, instead take a HR relevant topic for a discussion, which help the HR people to gain some good knowledge.

This is Tejesh, working as a HR in Pharmaceutical Org.
I agree with preet, Yes we celebrate other religion festivals like Christmas and our empl go for prayer on Friday. It is not hurting any other religion.
we don't have problem in Friday prayer and celebrating Christmas in office, then why should have a problem in ayutha puja in office once a year.

yes thank you for your opinion preet, it is good to come across such polite and helpful HR personnel over the net.
Tejesh, i appreciate your comments, but no other festival is celebrated apart from the Ayutha pooja in our office. we have a mixed group and now that HR has formed a dept, some staff have come up and talked about this. I am guessing instead of stopping the puja we should start celebrating other festivals as well.
what say you..?

Instead of that you can celebrate other festival in office.
make a employee survey that which festival has to be celebrated in office.
sit with senior people and decide which festival has to be celebrated.

Festivals like Ayutha Pooja, Deepavali,Independance day,Christmas, New Year should be celebrated in Companies. Gathering of employees on the events like these will bring togetherness & binding among employees. More the celebrations, better the belongingness. The is what you mean by Employee Engagement.
If there has been no celebrations so far, start right away with the Ayutha Pooja. I have organised this where ever i was working and have received good feedback from employees.
Make employees happy!! We don't exist without them.

ayutha puja = Dassera
Hey dont stop ayutha puja, its common all over india, and major manufacturing companies do celebrate it. In manufacturing, production companies, the workers worship their equipments, machineries, and all major equipments, with flowers, etc. Also in office people worship their computers, cupboards, furnitures. So it is concerned with sentiments,, so dont play with it, and it may take maximum 1 hr to do the PUJA, so for one hr dont end up having a bad name.
