Dear Colleague,

Trainee is a person who is given an opportunity to learn a job or work in an organization for a specified period of time ( normally 6 months to 1 year) during which he is given all inputs to pick up a skill/ job/ work etc. During this Training period he/she is paid a stipend by the Management. In case of Trainees PF has to be covered day one of such engagement.

(Apprentices who are appointed under the Provisions of Apprenticeship Act 1961 alone exempted from PF- Here this is a system of providing job skills to the fresh ITIs/ Diploma/ Degree holders with a formal contract entered and registered with Apprenticeship Advisor. There will be examinations and certification by Department governed by State / Central Government)

Probationer is a person who has been appointed against a Permanent Vacancy and one who is reasonably posses the skill and abilities to perform a job/ work/ role but needs observation about his fitment to the given job /role etc. Normally 6 months time will be given as Probation and then will be confirmed upon satisfactory performance during probation. Probationers are eligible for PF coverage from day one of appointment

A trainee is taken for the purpose of providing training. There will be no commitment / obligation for absorption after completion of training.
Whereas, a probationer is recruited to fill a permanent position existing or may arise. The probationary period is for observing the candidates performance, behavior, culture fit etc., and there will be a commitment for absorption upon successful completion of probation period.
However, both can be terminated subject to conditions of offer /appointment letter for non satisfactory performance. Of course, it will happen rarely.
