Hello. How to overcome the nervousness to face an interview due to my 2 years of maternity gap! I feel I lack the flow of vocabulary ..was never like this before. In short, I know the concept but couldn’t find words to express. Kindly through some light and pull me out of this weird situation. Thanks in advance:)

Dear member,

The cause of your nervousness could be different. It need not be a maternity gap of two years in your career.

Your problem could be lack of expressiveness. Other than an interview, are you able to express a situation or an incident or a story in a proper sequence or in a structured format?

To develop expressiveness, prepare yourself on a subject and express yourself solo. Tell some family members to take the video shooting. Check your video. You will find your own mistakes.

Check the videos on the presentation skills or read the material on the presentation skills. Implement it and you will find change in yourself.

By the way, you have not written your background. What kind of job did you do? Was there continuity in a particular field like HR, Purchase, Finance etc or was there variation? What kind of job do you wish to do? Did you gather information about your future role? Do you have requisite skills to perform your future job effectively?

Nervousness could be the result of your lack of confidence. Lack of confidence results from lack of competence. Therefore, develop the competence and the nervousness will go away automatically!

All the best!

Hi Charlotte ,
My personal take do your basics right , every one how much ever experienced goes through this so you are not alone , few take aways though.
1. Get yourself thoroughly prepared
2. Reach to the venue bit earlier so you get used to the environment.
3. Try and atleast do some improv at home before the interview on various scenarios which would help you a lot .
4. Also the lack of find correct words stems from the fact that you are desperate for the job , please don't go with the agenda that this would be the last job , stop making the interviewer aware of you needing the job. It helps to take the pressure off and give more clarity to think.
Hope this HELPS !!!All the best .

There is a notion that "not every man is important but every woman is" - this is, of course, is said primarily because of a woman's ability to bear a child. Try not to let it go to your head. :) Now, learn that there is very good reason why governments take so much care to design and implement maternity leave and care - you are creating the next generation of tax payers. So don't be nervous about the gap - be proud. :)
One other suggestion would be to consider talking to a psychatrist - there are conditions like 'post partum depression' and other states which create a different mind frame.

Dear madam,

In my view, your two year gap has a bit shaken up your confidence. But it is manageable and is only passing phase.

You are struck with irrational fears.

Suggest you recall the past interviews you have faced. Pose those questions to yourself and write down answers. Talk to your peers who are in similar roles as yours and find out what has changed in these two years in terms of job role. Then incorporate those relevant aspect in the possible questions which may be asked and write down the answers.

Rehearse your replies loudly by sitting in front of the mirror as if you are facing the real interview. Do it again and again till you get sufficient control over your speech, vocabulary and confident posture/body language. Then do video shooting of this mock interview and refine your presentation, dress , posture tone and choice of words.

Take guidence from some knowledgeable person by showing this video.

This process,I am sure, will give you immense confidence.

Hope you will grab new job soon and wish you good luck.
