In almost every interview, every candidate gets asked the question "Why should I hire you?".
While there is much content available about how to answer this question, I wonder what is the purpose of the interviewer asking this question in the first place? What are they really looking to hear or find out from the candidate?
Would it be suitable for the candidate to say "I am smart enough" etc? What is the real purpose of asking this question?
I would love to have healthy discussion over this!

All the candidates who apply will be having minimum qualifications for the job.
All would be having minimum experience as specified for the job.
What the employer is looking for from the question is why should they hire that particular candidate as opposed to all the others? They want to hear from the candidate's mouth what he sees in himself as specially suitable for the job.
Some may reply I have the qualifications, experience etc.
The way he relates his qualities and the confidence he shows and any special quality which makes him a better bet than others is what the employer looks for.

Nathrao has given you a concise answer. Let me make a comment first before adding to what Nathrao has said.
When I started work years ago, both in India and the UK, I never encountered such a question. Such a question is quite common now owing to the competition and the number of people applying for a job.
I just searched the web and found a lot of links at https://biginterview.com/blog/2013/0...-hire-you.html All these clearly explain why organisations ask such questions and how to answer.
It would be useful to bloggers to know what you do and why you have raised the question and what are your views for employers asking such a question. The main reason is to find a person that has the confidence to do the job in question and who can explain how (s)he thinks that her/ his appointment will add to the success of the organisation, etc.

Before reacting to the query, should interviewers ask such candidate's perception related question at all is what in my view requires a rethink because at the end it is interviewer's call on the suitability.
More often than not, the candidates show tendency either to oversell themselves or as a knee jerk reaction show inability to think on their feet in answering this question .
But viewed rightly, it may also give an opportunity to look within and honestly judge one's strengths of qualifications and experience and relate it the job profile and its deliverables and find out his suitability and display a desired level of confidence in expressing how his capabilities match them.
Exception apart, such question in my view, largely does not much add up to in taking final call on the best job- person fit.
