Some background details on the story - During the final year of my graduation, my father had passed away and due to his huge debts i couldn't continue college education, i dropped off but couldn't find any job over a period of a year. i had provided fake education certificate and joined an IT MNC as a fresher in bangalore.
10 years down the line, i got an outstanding rating for a consecutive 5 years, most valuable employee award atleast once in every role and worked relentlessly for myself and organization. Even company awarded me with restricted stock options due to my continued good work. Now i moved in to a new account and client had asked background verification to be done for all the employees including ones working from offshore. i had given my consent for background verification even though i had an other way out by resigning, this is because this guilt of doing wrong has been eating me all along and i want to come clean.i am not proud of myself for doing this nor stating in the above things, this is primarily just want to tell how much i contributed for company growth.
I am ready to face the consequences and fine with company firing for this reason and looking for options like freelancing where skills matter more than a degree. My primary concern is whether they will start any criminal proceeding for this? and block my Provident fund. that money is a substantial amount for me now and will help me until i put a foundation in freelancing. Please advice on how i should approach the HR.
Note - even if this background check comes clean, i am still planning to quit because this guilt has been too much for me. In a scenario where the background verification comes negative need suggestions on how to approach the HR.

Dear friend,
Chickens come home to roost. This is what has happened with you. You have been carrying heft of guilt of your shadowy activity for more than a decade. The fear of getting exposed always haunted you. But then you could have been wiser enough and asked for change of department where background checks are not done. You could have entered into semi-technical or non-technical departments.
Your major query what if the background verification comes negative. In such case HR may tell you to resign. This is a better option than termination. Anyway, you have prepared for the worst. Therefore, in the event of negative outcome of the background check then plead HR not to terminate you. This is the only option that I can see.
Thanks,

Hi,
First of all, your guilt for misrepresenting your credentials is not allowing you to think straight. Keep it aside, let the verification result come. Post that you can take a decision on the very state. If the verification turns green, then please don't take a hasty decision of moving out of the company and to start freelancing. This may not be the right choice, as the market is too competitive.
Also for the last 10 years, instead of carrying the guilt, you would have done few courses, through distance educational program. You had ample amount of time, which you never considered. Better be late than never, you can still try completing few courses now. Secondly, after considering your contribution towards the success of the company, they may not file a case legally (Many companies don't). As well PF share of yours cannot be blocked by them, legally.

Hi there,
What is done is done.
You know it and they will know it shortly, BUT the fault is theirs also as they failed to do the proper background check in the first place when they hired you!
So when the time comes, yes you'll come clean with them and highlight your situation back then that made you tell that lie, BUT again point out the fact that you worked hard as hell all these years in order not to fail them! And that only shows from the awards they gave to you for appreciation and the numbers on their year ending justifies that also.
I don't believe it's for their best interest to do big “damage” to you, as that lie worked really well for the company.
So most possible for you to be asked to resign.
Hope everything turns out well for your soul mostly as that burden you bear was for too long.
Anyways you'll be free!

From the facts stated, there was no mischief involved, but only a mistake. You have not or even tried to deceive anyone. It is not that, in the larger world, educational qualification alone matters. Capability matters, equally. And every prudent management recognises this aspect. Your straightforwardness and sincerity, I am sure, will take care your future.

Dear Anonymous, Its saying that if you speak lie which is good for the sake of betterment of the other people than you, its not lie, hence you need not feel guilty, because by hiding facts or misrepresenting about your education to pay debt of your father for the betterment of your family dependent has done more good than bad for lie. If you are asked for the explanation, orally you can speak to your immediate superior, else keep quite and think as others have advised to go in for some crash course, degree / diploma thru correspondence. Come out of guilt. Cheer up and face the consequences! Do not fear which is not in front of you!

Dear Team,
My third brother working in MNC company with fake Diploma engineering certificates. He changed multiple companies with the same fake certificates. No one not found these certificates fake. He is doing the same for the last 15 years. Now he become smarter and using fake B.Tech engineering certificates for getting a good job in another company. he successfully passed the background verification also from the Third-party. Earlier he was debarred from Intermediate for attempting forgery of the principal signature on exams hall ticket. Then I came to know my second brother's diploma engineering certificates and third brother's diploma engineering certificates are the same except the name change and year. I have collected enough proof. I have sent my third brother's Diploma engineering certificates to the concerned State Board of Technical education and training (SBTE&T) and received a letter as the certificates which I sent were not genuine. My third brother has almost 4 Diploma engineering colleges certificates along with his name. When I asked him for an explanation why he is acting like this, both two brothers are threatening me like If they were caught, they are ready to spoil my career and family by involving my name. I request you please suggest how I need to proceed with my two brothers?
