I have completed my MBA in marketing and have worked for 5.5 years in sales. But last year I got transferred in HR and did not get any training/orientation about HR department from the organization. I would like to know the major job responsibilities of HR department.

Tell me, did you not cover HR as a function in your basic MBA? You could refresh from your old books to get the theoritical direction. Additionally, after working for 5.5 years, the practical eperience can also come handy.
Suppose you were running the sales department - what all would you expect from an HR department to do for you? Recruitment, selection (with a defined methodology), compensation, employee benefits (motivation for them to continue to meet sales targets), train people in sales (product, sales skills, train about the amrket they are operating in, etc.).
I am deliberately leaving this thought with you, so that you could ponder deeper on it and keep thinking yourself.
