It is compulasory for the worker. You can pay their contributions on their ESI code or the contractor can pay on his own

Dear Mr.Ashish,
Refer to your query, if any contract labour has worked 4 or 5 days, the employer has to pay contributions accordingly. If any accident takes place during the course of the period leads to disability/death, the labour get Medical Benifit and also Disability Benifit and De pendants Benifit in the case of death under the provisions of ESIC.

for this you need to consider his nature of work (casual/contracto/ regular)
if he is on roles you have to cove him under ESI form the day one . . .irrespective of his working day
It will be helpful if any unexpected happened on the company grounds
