Motivation at work place

The topic specifically given is not just ‘Motivation” but “Motivation at work place”. I am writing this article restricting to work place environment and not ‘motivation’ related to ‘remuneration’.

One finds today Medium and Large companies moderately doing well allocates and spends a reasonable amount of profits in their plants and offices for employee comfort at all levels. The objective is to ensure that the employees give their best quantity and quality outputs without any physical discomfort working in their shifts or offices . They may have to work anywhere between 40 to 47 hours working per week. Therefore it becomes imperative that besides remuneration and incentives employees are motivated to work in aesthetic surroundings and the work place on the shop floors and offices must be provided with ergonomic comfort to minimize fatigue. It is needless to say that the inter personal relationships between manager/supervisor and workmen / subordinates and between peers \\

The Corporates and Business houses all over the world are vying with each other to provide the best of things to their employees within their resources with a view to increase productivity, best quality products and competitive prices and best services. Outlined below are some of the techniques followed by companies.

Interpersonal relations , no doubt, form the key of work environment motivation. When we talk of interpersonal relations it is from the CEO to unskilled worker on the shop floor. Many organizations continuously train their employees formally by expert trainers so that inter personal relations are well maintained and desired goals are achieved. One should note that good relationship does not mean compromise in work. The relationship can be maintained by a CEO or a Manager or a Supervisor with assertiveness in work area but still motivate their teams by establishing rapport with each and every member of the team and supporting them on their individual problems.

Next is food at work place. Even the smallest company with about 5 or 6 workers / staff keep aside some space in their premises for their employees to have lunch, tea etc peacefully. Large companies however can afford a hygienic and comfortable place with good furniture for employees to have their lunch / snacks normally called ‘canteen’ Some companies are playing light music or even TV during lunch hours. The food is made nutritious and tasty. An officer of HRD department preferably a female is entrusted with the responsibility of checking the quality of food prepared in the canteen. Normally an ‘employee canteen committee’ is nominated by the union and ratified by the management for selecting the weekly menu and matters related to the canteen. The meetings of the committee are facilitated by the HR officer. Almost every organization makes arrangement to serve breakfast snacks and tea time snacks (2nd shift) on the shop floor or in the offices. This is to help save the working time. Tea or coffee now a days is served thro vending machines.

Workers or in some cultures even staff and executives are made to wear uniforms. This is to promote the idea that every body is same in carrying their respective jobs. This is taken from Japanese as it proved to be a success and now followed by some Indian companies. The management can ensure smart dressing by providing adequate number of uniforms either free or at highly subsidized prices with a reasonable washing allowance to the employees .

Some companies who are away from Metros also provide workers, staff and officers quarters charging a very nominal rent and providing transport facilities from the colonies to the plants. For other employees who do not like to stay in colonies are provided bus service from some selected points in the city. Tthe employees have to strictly adhere to the bus timings.

Every organization now a days takes it as a prestige to give out aesthetic look externally as well as inside the plants and offices. The buildings are tastefully painted befitting the organization. The company’s monogram or logo or brand image are prominently displayed on the buildings. The surroundings of these buildings apart from nice small roads are kept attractive by well maintained lawns, flower gardens, water fountains and whatever looks appropriate and beautiful. Sometimes they display their products like an old model car or aeroplane or locomotive etc., manufactured by them in the initial years. If the products are smaller in size then a range of products are displayed near the ‘Reception’

All interiors for the offices are with the ‘state of the Art’ furniture and modern Air conditioning systems Cabins are provide for senior executives and top managers tastefully furnished and with functional communication and operational systems. Recreation Clubs for senior executives is not uncommon in or near factory premises. Reliance DAKC, Cable Corporation in India are few examples

The above mentioned facilities create a pleasant and compatible work environment for the workers, staff and executives. In addition adequate space for car parking, scooter parking Bus alighting and even cycle parking is provided at convenient spots in plant / office area so that the employees can reach their respective work stations in minimum possible time

The ‘motivation’ factor at work place is also motivating the managements to show off their best so that employees are proud of their work place and also build up public image along with product image for their organization

Some of the best companies in this regads are Larsen & Toubro, Reliance DAKC, Godrej, Ispat Industries Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Escorts, Maruti Suzuki and many others are located in India at Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad and other cities.

Hi All
Very good and thought provoking article. We have to discuss about it and get to know is it all available in most of the companies. Where in some companies employees are not even getting good place to sit and have their lunch.
Dress code is an acceptable one
HR Manager should treat everyone in the company as same. and give respect to other employees. And he/she should be able to develop the interpersonal relationship between employees from the CEO to shopfloor employee.
Cheers

Good article.
Anu, the question you have asked is very pertinent. Is it available in majority of the organisations? Can everyone put in their thoughts please.
As far as the organisation where i am in is concerned, the situation is a little better than waht Anu stated - place to sit and have lunch. This is ofcourse there and good. What is somehow lacking is the environment. I have been trying to figure where do we lack and it has ended up with the absolutely number focussed attitude of us. There doesn't seem to be anything other than numbers in life. No great friendly interaction. Last few months i have been trying to get some "life" into the system. Hoe, the eternal hope, keeps me going and trying.
thanks

Of course Dips,
Numbers and businesses are important. People can perform their best when they have good infrastructure and supporting boss. Most of my bosses are self centred and when a problem comes they normally escape from that saying that their subordinates are not performing well.
Mental support should be provided from the bosses that they will provide support always.
A friendly environment should be there in the organisation. When a person did some thing good he should get the appreciation in terms of words, or a lunch with boss something like this. But normally what happens. When he did something good it means his boss is good and when he didnot perform well it means he is not capable of doing nothing. This scenario has to be changed in order to bring a healthy relationship in any organisation.

Well I find inspiration to work when I go to the movies, theaters or to the circus. Recently I went to the Circus du Soleil https://best-vegas.com/cirque-du-soleil/ and it was something! Art helps to look at things outside the box!
