Hi dear friends,
We are unable to control the spitting culture at shop floors.
Most of the workmen have a habit of chewing of Tobacco and Pan.
They also contaminate the land also by the pouches.
I seek suggestions from you to eliminate this problem.

Hi friend,
we also faced the same problem and we implemented a new system which goes like this
1. Those who are found to be chewing bubble gum / pan / spitting in the floor should pay a fine of 50 rupees everytime when they are found doing such things and every month end the total amount collected as fine will be given to the house keeping staffs in cash/gifts etc...,
2. We found out the places were people spit and we cleaned the place and we stuck up photos of top performers, photos of employees who celebrate their b'day and a notice board in those places.
It was succecfull suggestion framed by me four months back in my old firm and still being practiced in th floor.

Dear Sagar,
It was a good suggestion given by Mr.Pravin, but it is not legally possible. Since you cant fine an employee on the ground that he has split in the floor, unless you have mentioned this misconduct in The Standing Orders or any service agreement.
Moreover, you cant fine an employee and pay others, it should be paid to the LWF.
Suggest you amend your SOs, and implement the fine system. Placing photos in the place is an innovative suggestion from Mr.Pravin.

Dear Sagar & Suresh,
Mr. Suresh is right but Its legally possible. Those conditions which were not covered under specified terms, it comes under other heads / miscallenous. Thank u suresh for bringing this to our notice.

This is a good topic... I only wish we could extend this to the rest of India - a beautiful country that people simply can’t keep clean! Siiiigh! :(

Dear pravin
Thanks for the suggestion,
We thought of this fine collection system, but can we do some thing to bring culture change. How many days we collect this fine it is practically not possible for so a plant with more than 1,00,000 sq m area.
As regarding pasting of photos, as suggested by some one we put photos of gods. The spitting is stopped at that area and started another area near by.
The don't leave any pillar ( like dogs) and holes, plants, flower pots and some times machines.
A culture change is required.

Dear Sagar,
U stole the words from my mouth. We need a culture change. Unless or untill we make it a habit, it is highly impossible to keep our work area clean & tidy.
A Doctor adviced me that our saliva is good to prevent ulcers & other diseases likely to occur in our digestive systems. our saliva is a natural medicine gifted by God for us. So its good to swallow it rather than spitting it. I dont know when will these people understand this.
Thanks Sagar,

Mr Sagar,
If the rules are strict no one would dare to do it again .
1.If you would embarass or insult just like pricking a banana with a pin in fornt of each and every staff may be he would dare not do it again.
2.Else ask your shop floor supervisor to check their pockets and if they are entering the premises with a pan, beeda etc... keep a dust bin in the entrance near the supervisor at shop floor and ask them to dispose it off in front of the supervisor and ask the supervisor to dispose it off too .the same could be followed after the lunch . Check their pockets , tiffin box if possible their mouth too.
3.Else install dustbins near every corner of the room and other feasible locations so that it is easily avaliable for the employees to spit .

Dear Sagar,
Its a seriuos problem of spiting at shop floor level, throwing pouchs of gukta etc. the company need to overcome this problem as it not only spiol the enviroment, but creates a very bad working conditions for the workers. Here are a few suggestions for stopping this.
1. Create anti tabbaco drive in your company by taking into confidence the top mgmnt, ask for fines like Rs. 50 for spiting, not only that tell the culprit to clean the mess. I know this cant be severely implimented. please inform the HOD of the dept abt the problem convey the messege that they would be directly responsible for the spiting and come under the scanner if TOP mgnt finds such spiting in the shop floor of thier dept. They would create direct pressure on the workers to stop the activity. Arrange for surprise visit by the Director or any top official of the company like at late night or early in the morning.
2. Arrange for a anti Tabboco Training programs that explains the health problems that arise out of such tabbaco eating habits. this will force the workers to rethink on thier bad habits.
I know this process is difficult but the condition is too take the top mgmnt inconfidence and then taking action, it would take time but gradually such practices will evaporate.

An idea just ocurred... Why don't u hang a tantalizing carrot for the people on the shop floor? - no spitting and littering for 1 month and they get a treat - plan a treat - like taking them out to an icecream parlour or if u can't take them out, hire a TV and a good movie and get some snacks.. Encourage cleanliness. If this works, u can have a person in charge of cleanliness very month and give away cash awards (cash awards are meaningful to people at that level) - keep a dedicated bin for spitting and littering and generally encourage good habits... You can also appeal to their sense of patriotism and organise some cleanliness related stuff and awards on August 15th every year..
