I am kalpana, currently doing a course in O D. As a part of our curriculum I need some inputs from you all on the topic " How effective is mentoring in an organization. Is there any special training required to be given to a mentor, are there any code of ethics in mentoring. Should Organizations promote mentoring. Hi Kalpana,
Mentoring is playing a vital role in organizational growth. You can search on net, there are thousands of sites explaining the benefits of mentoring program. However the catch is how effectively the mentoring program is implemented in the organization. Since it is largely informal program so the effectivity of it is dependent on the sincerity and buy-in from the stakeholders. HR can facilitate to improve effectivity by providing the follwoing support:
1. Well designed & communicated policy for mentoring program.
2. Training the mentors
3. Selecting the mentors and mentees
4. Overseeing the periodic meetings between mentor and mentees.
5. Linking mentoring program with the succession plan and career pathing.
It is always better to have a structured roll out of the mentoring program otherwise it will loose its effectivity.
