Dear Friends,

The ongoing economic slowdown has reared it's ugly head in my firm with the management taking some serious decisions. Being in HR, I and my colleagues are left with the thankless job of carrying out this decision. Additionally, we also have to ensure motivation of my remaining people.

In my quest to do this I had come across an important article, some of the contents of which I am attaching in a word file. For all of us in the HR field & especially in these trying times, this is a must read.

Hope all of you benefit out of it.

With warm regards,

Ravi Tandon

Benefits & Importance of Internal Communication During Recession

Internal communication when managed with professional aid smoothens the task of crisis communication and minimize the damage to company’s image as an Employer.

It strengthens employees' confidence in the company by adopting a clear and honest crisis communication programme. It helps countering rumour mills that increase employees' anxiety and thus create panic in times of crisis.

Sharing the company’s preparations to tackle the slowdown crisis sends clear and positive message to all employees: "Our company is preparing to tackle the crisis and wishes to keep us informed about everything".

If the company openly communicates the facts and plans with employees, they co-operate well by supporting it. And the impact of any bad news is minimised, as they know it's a part of the crisis management efforts.

If everything is blamed on economy then we are rendering the current team helpless. Hence it’s important to motivate the team with positive messages that we can overcome the crisis by delivering our best.

If non-performing people are laid off, it affects the morale of performers too.
Establishing a positive communication with them about a secured future and stability will help in restoring their confidence and retaining them.

Almost all organizations focus on cost cutting and ask people to do multitasking, both requires taking people into confidence. An honest and explicit communication in this regard breaks the resistance and involves the people in battling the slowdown.

The image of company as an employer is tarnished due to multiple harsh decisions or restructuring done in many areas. Effective communication improves the image of company in the mind of employees' as a Responsive organisation.

The slowdown won't remain forever, but managing internal crisis effectively, will protect the company's image from a severe damage, thus making it easy to recruit again during good times.

While it's a good idea to pick up some talent from market during slowdown, the best way to recruit in the most cost-effective manner in such times is through branded Internal Referral Recruitment programme.
