Self Discipline

Control mechanisms like disciplinary procedures paralyse employees and employers alike. Policies, protocols, laws and regulations that support such procedures stifle employees.

However, employers can create an environment that minimises the need for supervisory control. This encourages employees to develop and practice self-discipline.

Facilitating the process of self-discipline:

Clarify expectations:

This gives employees scope to improve, better their skills in problem solving and take initiatives.

Encourage initiatives:

Encouraging employee initiatives ensures their implementation. Rewarding employees for such work adds value and promotes self-discipline.

Treat employees as mature adults:

Guide employees through minimal rules and regulations and provide a fair and consistent work environment. Self-discipline can be encouraged by providing them the necessary inputs for their work and allowing them to make decisions.

Provide timely training:

Adequate training ensures that the employees are equipped with the necessary tools that facilitate their contribution towards continuous improvement.

Make necessary policies and procedures available:

Seek employee inputs while implementing new policies. This paves way for a better understanding between the employer and the employees.

Allocate time for interaction:

Spending time with employees gives the employers an opportunity to discuss their ideas and other interests in an informal atmosphere.

Allow mistakes:

Employees must be allowed to make intelligent mistakes. As a result their innovation and creativity are triggered.

An environment that promotes self-discipline obviates the need for external supervision.
