While Philips Innovation Campus (PIC) opted to make its employees put on salsa heels, Evalueserve lets its staff get high on the dance fever during ‘happy hours’. At Intel, employees shook a leg at Verve 2008, a family event using dance to celebrate the year’s achievements.
“The theme ‘Pirate’ set the tone for the party with spectacular performances by employees,” said R Anish, director (HR), Intel South Asia. Doing a jig alongside is Infosys BPO with its inter-process couples’ dance competition and DJ nights or mornings allowing employees to let themselves loose with a lot of music and oodles of fun.
Others like Nucleus Software, Sapient and 24/7 Customer, added the dance punch to their daily work schedule through clubs dedicated for these activities.
Whatever the method deployed by the IT and ITeS firms, the techie brigade is setting the dance stage on fire across campuses. Destressing your stressed nerves, exploring your hidden talents, fun@work and individual wellness are some reasons they cite for the rage spreading.
Sateeshu Kandikuppa, technical specialist, PIC, who has learnt salsa and is now learning Bollywood dance forms at the on-campus dance classes, said: “This helped me learn different dance forms. Thanks to the classes, I did something I had never imagined, four on-stage performances.”
While Sateeshu used it as a confidence booster to flaunt his hidden talent, some techies sought recreational refuge. “Participating in dance events organised by the fun@work community at Sapient helped me get over work tension. It is amazing how I keep thinking of finishing all the to-dos for the day, but when I attend these events, my tension disappears and nothing remains except peace of mind,” says Neha Sood, senior associate, internal communications, Sapient.
An employee at Evalueserve, who attended salsa classes at Gurgaon, said: “There are days when one reaches saturation point and your ideas hit a dead-end. Such activities refresh me and I start work with renewed energy and a fresh perspective. It helped me slow down an otherwise fast-paced life.”
On-campus dance events also let the employee workout, without compromising on time, that one usually makes to go to the gym. Y Krishnamohan, senior director (HR) PIC, says: “At PIC this year, we clubbed fun and fitness of employees and started a “Fun N Fitness” activity where yoga, dance and aerobic classes are conducted thrice a week.”
Charu Bahl, a Nucleus Software employee, says: “The experience at the oncampus dance classes was wonderful. I feared working out at the gym with those heavy machines, so these classes were perfect for me. Not only was it a fun workout but it boosts self-confidence, energy and helps you develop a positive outlook towards life.”
While these on-campus events have loads of personal benefits of relaxing your body and making you accomplish your secret desire of being the star at parties, the collective output impact makes all companies want to ‘move your body’. Employee bonding and the productivity lift it offers make these fun activities a key retention strategy of companies.
“Such team activities require great discipline and perfect co-ordination between members. It lets employees spend valuable time with each other and understand colleagues beyond professional abilities. Since the senior management participates in the dance activities, the bonding goes deeper between Nucleites across hierarchies,” said Prakash Pai, president, Nucleus Software.
An Infosys BPO spokesperson says, “Such interaction lets them learn other’s opinions and views. It is a good platform to learn skill sets of your peers.” It makes Anisha Lobo, an employee of Intel India, ‘part of one big family!’ while for Gaurav Mathur, a Sapient employee, the dance classes spread a community feeling making people shun designation consciousness.
Nina Nair, VP (HRD), 24/7 Customer, says: “Such team building activities help employees be more productive in achieving team goals. It helps build a great corporate culture.”
Prathe Jagadeesh, a PIC employee, says: “During salsa classes, I interact with a person working for HR/operations. It made it easier to post any queries to her, however trivial they were.”
“It gave me the much-needed respite from my computer. The classes rejuvenated me and I would return to my PC with a lot of energy to accomplish things. This helps increase productivity,” says Neha.
Manoj Madhusudanan, VP, Evalueserve, said: “A happy workplace is a key pre-requisite to higher productivity and lower attrition. People who think these activities create distraction are terribly mistaken.” Firms not yet tapping a feet to the beat are bound to get a feet bite on their bottom lines. So, it’s footloose time across the IT belt.
