Dont comment and deviate from the topic.
As I clarified it with you earlier : Both the context are different - but the level of importance is the same.
Ignoring "tell me abt urself" is what we are talking abt

firends,
i feel its an introductory question to bring candidate in comfort initially. Obviously, its also gives some glimpse of his/her personality, comm skills etc.. its helps interviewer as well as candidate. You never know frm which background candidate is coming...
Though its never been a mandatory question. Depends upon the interviewer.
anywaz Prashant must b overloaded with responses..but its nice to see so many replies...
bye

Dear Mr. Das,

Request you all to note that until and unless we go through the CVs, complete the screening process we may not be calling the candidates for interview.
The reason behind asking this question basically is that even though the candidatee experienced but the candidate is sitting infront of new people and for any body and every body it needs some time to adjust and come to normalcy hence the very easy thing and useful thing is knowing each other. The interviewer expects more on your family as they know about the qualifications, places he worked and the age etc.
By asking this question they expect that the candidate will be explaning more about his family and some about himself, that means the candidate will be taking a good time which can be utilized for assessing his body language, confidance levels, speech / communication, logical thinking, the corelation between thinking and expression, sequences etc., etc.,
In my opinion this will reduce the stress / curiosity, brings a cordial and friendly atmosphere in to the interview chamber.
If you are a real asseser you should start your assesing right from how the candidate knocked the door, how he wished, has he waited till the team offering the chair / sat on his own taking an initiative / the posture he sat, if he is unable to understand / hear the question how he is requesting for getting the info once again etc., need to be obsedrved.
Interviewing is an art and I don't find any wrong in asking some different type of questions, but there should be a reason behind it and finally it depends on you how you / in turn organization will get benefit out of the same by choosing a right fit.

k ravi..
to say 'tell me about urself is stupid question' is silly.
there are thousand way how we can assess the candidates. one of it is how they communicate and express themselves.
many of hr professionals were trained on personality traits. while the candidates are answering 'tell me about yourself' many of these traits can be assessed.
and...only silly person call other stupid and make pre judgment??? are you one of those...:):?:

Hi friends,

Big & important discussion is going on

I do agree with Ash, Mnj & many other my friends supporting this topic.
On the basis of this discussion I would like to share my experience with all.

I had gone through one CV. It was really excellent (format of CV, educational qualification, working experience everything was too good)

But Friends, whent I have conducted the interview of this guy, everything was exactely opposite of his profile. (According to me It was readymade CV, only name , address was changed)

He was unable to communicate properly. Also I have observed his tendancy to change the job on contineous basis

The most surprising thing was, that guy was terminated from one company doe to non-performace (One of my friend is working in that company)

So friends, it is very important to ask these basic questions,. sothat we will be able to know the facts. In fact it is necessary to ask these question to know the attitude, ability to accept the challanges, his overall behaviour, ability to learn somthing new, his communication etc.

Thanks

Hema

Dear All,
Nice participation and the discusssion was excellent.
Let us conclude this topic here.
Basing on the above 50+ discussions it is clearly understood that HR can ask this Question and nothing wrong in that.
We can test the patience level of the candidates by asking this kind of questions.
When we ask repeted question
If he get irritates like Mr.XYZ his patience level is very low or giving answers obediently means he is having very good patience.
In other angle we can check it out the confidence level of the candidate.
The confidence level is different from known question to unknown question.
So finally HR can ask this kind of questions but it depends on the situation.
Dont waste time to continue this or by prolonging this discusssion instead of that let us discuss with a different topic.

Hello Mr. Kupuswamy,

Can you explain us what is the actual definition of marriage, if you really go through, you will feel that when you are going to interview somewhere its just like marriage; because its you feel impact of marriage and service will be similar. In today scenario we are discussing regarding work – life balance. It’s why people go crazy / choosey while going out for an interview because if you are selected, you are going to spare most valuable time of your life, that you cannot spare with you family. Also your social life depends on your business life as far as your time / money/ events are concerned. You can imagine if both husband and wife are working what happen to their families and social life; it’s very easy to understand what we are today its not because of our contributions to the society. Its cycle and we have to complete this carefully & successfully to get remembered by our next generations.

Hope you understand if not need some more clarifications from board moderators.
