Hi,
As commented by our fellow members, you shall initiate your moves with much care, as smokers will surely get offended, until the person puts the message in a right way. Like Sid said, you shall cough, and show that your are uncomfortable. Also the ones which worked for me, is taking a gum and offering one to the person who smoked, with a SMILE :)

All the cite hr folks said well and gave very nice solutions,
From my end, if you still looking for any alternative solution, Let him know that you are not comfortable with smoking by giving signs like closing your nose/ coughing gently, etc., He should notice that you are not comfortable with that kind of activity. If he is really good one he will try to stop doing that when you are beside him. Then there would be a chance to get out of that place for smoking too.
