Well, according to me management is all about managing people, and more people and getting them to work. You can make machines do what u want but just try that with people!!!!
In practice, forget what the books say. Just use all your senses (more than 5,:icon5:) intuitions, psychology, anything to get the best out of people and lead them onward. In the process they should feel uplifted and motivated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's all. :huh::-D:icon10::idea::confused:

Dear Ravi_HRM & others:

i would have agreed with you, had the question being something like; "...I have studied Management and related concepts; yet I am not able to grasp the essence. i am curious to know, if experienced persons who apply the princiciples of Management, have any other definition of Management than the academic one?... etc."

In the present form, nashbramhall, a Senior Member & Board Moderator is perfectly right in getting irritated. The question is like a person who got a driving Licence (may be without passing a driving test, but "managing" it) asking " What is a car?" or a person with a LLB degree (again may be a "managed" degree) asking. "What is a Court?"

Seen in this light nashbramhall has rightfully responded with certain apprehension about the institute.

This is a forum for HR professional - seasoned or otherwise; who network to gain new knowledge on intricacies & ambiguity of HR issues and its future developments. Such generic question do dilute its seriousness. If you are a sportsman, then you'll understand - would test players prefer to play matches with mohalla cricket team?

And finally my answer to gayu is :

My dear, there are many definitions of "management"; but the concept is so broad & deep that management gurus keep working at it. there are many everydaqy questions (like, why did Ramalinga Raju has to do it? How come a company like GM could not avaoid it? why did US banks get into sub-prime loans and got the whole world deep into this recession shit) to which we are yet to find any answer.

In my opinion, "management" is what certain workers in a big industry told me, some twenty years back:

- MANAGing MEN Tactfully :icon1:

- getting THINGS done (by hook or by crook - added as an after-thought) :icon10:

- knowing everything (as in 'management knows everything') :icon6:

Regards.

the word management contains words like " Man", Age, Men & Ment". Using this you can define " management" is an art of getting the work done by menting men ( includes women also - don't get me wrong) of different ages towards a common goal or purpose.

There is a lot of controversy over the term “MANAGEMENT”. Without going into the controversy let’s try to understand it. Management is simply a discipline like medical, teaching, law and any other profession. Those who practice medical called doctors and practitioner of law called lawyers likewise practitioner management called manager.

The discipline of management is different form other discipline in some respect. See while for practicing profession like law, medical and Company Law etc. one need to posses an essential prescribed qualification but for practicing management one need not to posses any degree or diploma in the relevant field. One can be a successful manager on the basis of experience and wisdom. Second difference may be the results. A manager is concerned not only with the process of doing something but also with the result. He has to be result oriented.

What you say? Let me have your views on this……….

Dev

Hi,
Simply put; Management is utilising the given resources to the maximum in the most efficient manner and deliver the required results.
I guess the one liner says it all. This can ofcourse be discussed in detail.

Dear Gayu,

Congrats for asking the right defination. Primarily management means not all the above stuff, which people have shared with u, but it is to manage ur non- productive, un-skilled, bureacrats bosses and then secondarily it comes to manage ur organisation, Which ur well-wishers have correctly defined. If u learn the primary thing, no doubt u will be successful manager.
