Dear Anusoni, You can keep any designation for your reference in your file but my suggestion is to mentioned in his appointment letter as : Machanical Engineer hired on temporary basis.

" Designation" is one of the aspects of job-description. When you want to distinguish an employee from other similarly designated persons on the basis of the tenure or nature of his appointment, I think that your suggestion seems to be appropriate.
